A very poetic and melancholy horror film from Japan that is short and sweet but also quite gruesome. Ryoichi is a young boy going to school with his sister after checking through the government quarantine officials. A virus has broken out turning people into flesh-eating zombies. The bus he boards gets into a crash and he is left for dead among the living dead. Escaping from his now zombie sister he falls over a cliff and is discovered by a zombie hunter. As he grows up he becomes a well known hunter-for-hire himself and applies a very interesting business trait from his mentor to his own practice.
The movie looks like it was shot on high-definition video, which gives it a documentary type feel. Like in the George Romero films, director Naoyoshi Kawamatsu feels empathy for the undead and shows them to be monsters to be pitied and yet despised. There are a few unsettling yet somehow sympathetic scenes featuring the walking dead.
The film is short but it is very effective and Synapse has included some great extras including a making of documentary and a short film. This film is a must see feature for fans of zombie films and should rate as a favorite.
