Tim Van Horn is a drumming beast! Fans of both Aesthetic Perfection and CombiChrist can boast about TVH’s insane live performances. Tim was kind enough to take time to have a chat with Punk Globe. Check it out:

Punk Globe: Thank you for taking the time to chat with Punk Globe. Happy New Year! Kicking off 2013, are they any resolutions you have made for the New Year?
TIM VAN HORN: To finish every bottle of vodka before it goes bad. Because once you open them, they spoil after 2 hours.
Punk Globe: Were you always interested in music? What sparked your love?
TIM VAN HORN: I always love music. I remember my dad blasting the beach boys when I was a kid, and dancing around. That’s probably where it began.
Punk Globe: What was your first concert?
TIM VAN HORN: My first concert was Marilyn Manson. I saw him in NJ. I loved it, and I wanted to be a part of something like that.
Punk Globe: When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
TIM VAN HORN: I wanted to own a pizzeria! I actually made my own awesome pizza recipe that I make twice a week at home, and I get to live out my fantasy by tossing the pizza up in the air. Amazingly, I haven't dropped one on the floor yet.
Punk Globe: Who are some of your current favorite musicians? Are there any artists in particular that you idolize?
TIM VAN HORN: As far as current, I would say: iamx, alkaline trio, thrice, innerpartysystem, afi. I love pretty much everything these bands do.
Punk Globe: You are easily one of the best drummers in the alternative music industry. I can boast this fact because I have seen many big name artists live, and their drumming skills do not compare. You have set your own standard. When you take the stage you are so charismatic and driven. Where did you find your passion for music?
TIM VAN HORN: I just really love trying to put on a fun show. I think it is so much fun to see bands that entertain beyond just performing the songs. I guess the passion comes from remembering those artists that entertained me growing up.
Punk Globe: How long did it take you to perfect your style of drumming?
TIM VAN HORN: its never EVER perfect! I’ll always keep practicing and working harder to better my drumming.
Punk Globe: You have toured with different acts including Combi Christ and Aesthetic perfection. Can you tell us a bit about each act? Where did your tours take you?
TIM VAN HORN: My first tour was with AP, and we were opening for CC. It started in North America, then onto Europe, Russia, and Australia. And then again. And again. And with CC I’ve done a few tours covering for Joey, or Trevor when they were unable to do a tour. The tours I did with them were in Europe and Australia. And then a few one offs here and there in North America. Playing drums for AP is playing a lot of dance beats, and hi hat rhythms. And CC, it’s a heavier version of that, and means a lot more black make up in my suitcase. But both require a ton of energy onstage.
Punk Globe: What is the energy like at international shows as opposed to shows based in the USA?
TIM VAN HORN: It’s pretty much the same. There are nights that are better than others everywhere of course, but every city knows how to rage.
Punk Globe: What have been some of the most memorable fan encounters?
TIM VAN HORN: when we played Mexico City, we were doing a signing after the show. And some kid came up to us with a Combi Christ t-shirt. We told him we weren’t Combi Christ, but he insisted. He said, "sign sign" over and over. So I grabbed the pen and signed "Joey" and then passed it to Dan, and he signed "Andy". He was so happy ha-ha.
Punk Globe: Over the years you have traveled quite a bit for shows. What have been some of your favourite cities?
TIM VAN HORN: Copenhagen! Because the Danes rock! London. Rome. And my favorite, Brisbane. Holding koalas, and feeding kangaroos. What’s better than that?
Punk Globe: Any specific venues that you always anticipate playing?
TIM VAN HORN: Madison square garden. Someday maybe?? I think I've played all the small venues that I have been going to shows at since I was a kid.
Punk Globe: Your most recent tour with William Control and The Birthday Massacre did not start off smoothly. You hit many bumps, first you weren’t able to access equipment, and then flights were cancelled. With all the chaos how did you manage to keep level headed and keep the show on the road?
TIM VAN HORN: that WAS chaos. I was stuck in AZ (thanks to hurricane sandy) after playing a CC show and everything I needed for tour was in NY. So I flew to LA, borrowed drums from Joey, my manager gave me all the bands that he manages' t-shirts and merch to wear, we rented a van and drove to Chicago from LA. The only think that kept it together was Dan not losing his cool, because honestly I was losing it a little ha-ha. But then we met up with TBM, and they were such awesome, welcoming people, that we forgot about all the chaos and the tour went on. The vodka also helped.
Punk Globe: Let’s talk about the man behind the drums. Your You Tube channel is hilarious, ninja turtles and giant rice crispy squares. You have a great sense of humor. Can you share a bit about your life outside of drumming?
TIM VAN HORN: ha-ha, there’s a really good hackie sack video on there than Dan and I made on the last tour that’s definitely worth watching by the way. I spend a lot of time drawing and making art type things. A lot it just dumb shit like dinosaurs and pizza. And then the rest is for jobs. I try to watch alot of movies, and catch up with shows on netflix. And I like cooking and trying to make my own recipes.
Punk Globe: If only one could survive: would you choose dinosaur toys, or ninja turtle toys?
TIM VAN HORN: I'm not answering this one. They might read it and I just cant have that kind of revolt going on in my house.
Punk Globe: What can fans look forward to seeing from you in the future?
TIM VAN HORN: tons more touring. There’s so much in the works right now. Dan and I always try to come up with ideas to make the next tour better than the last.
Punk Globe: Do you have any advice you can offer for young musicians whose sound does not cater to the top 40 crowds?
TIM VAN HORN: just keep working as hard as you can. Do as many projects as you can. When one fails, start again. Never give up! Oh, and make sure you don't like money. It doesn't really exist in music anymore.
Punk Globe: Thank you for taking the time to chat! Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?
TIM VAN HORN: thanks for spending the time to read this, and I hope to see you on the road this year! Turtle power bitches!
