The Go Set

Australia's Hardest Working Band

Interview By: Ginger Coyote

The Go Set have been working their magic for quite a number of years now. Punk Globe interviewed them last year. We heard that they have a new releases out so we decided to catch up with Justin Keenan to find out what the band has going on...

PUNK GLOBE:
The Go - Set are always working. Tell the readers about what you have been up since our last interview?

Justin:
Basically, we've just been touring a lot. We toured the USA for the first time, and have done a couple of trips around Australia. Busy as always. We've made a new album 'Rolling Sound' and a documentary film called 'These are the Days', which is being pitched to TV and film festivals at the moment.

PUNK GLOBE:
In between all your touring you managed to release a new Cd. Tell us about that Justin?

Justin:
Yeah, we bunkered down in an old boardriders surf club on the south coast near where we live in Australia. We basically set the clubhouse up as a studio, and set up mics and cameras everywhere. Essentially after that, we just did what we would do live, and that is to drink beer and play the songs with heaps of energy - as though it was a gig. So, there wasn't a lot of overdubs or anything like that, it's pretty raw and live. We mixed it ourselves (with our engineer whiz Nick Huggins) and then had it mastered in Adelaide. The album is on CD and vinyl, and we've added the DVD into the package to make it a double disc pack.

PUNK GLOBE:
I have been hearing something about a full length film. What is that all about?

Justin:
We've been filming our gigs and travels from the start really, and had about 12 years of footage. We thought it would be a great idea to start going through it, and along the way found that it was a really great story. It's essentially a story of growing up together as band, and trying to remain independent whilst taking our music to the world. I think it's equal parts struggle and triumph. I mean, the music industry itself is the hardest, most ruthless, and most immoral industry out there, but the journey, the people, the places, the laughter, the memories.....that's the stuff that keeps artists going. The film is called 'These are the Days', and it will be released in the US later this year. People can also grab it at our shows.

PUNK GLOBE:
Tell us about the video 'Bones' from your new release?

Justin:
We made the 'Bones' clip in a warehouse in Melbourne. We really wanted to capture the gritty, rustic feel of the song. We de- colorized the film and Ago (our drummer) edited and produced everything. He's quite the talent with that stuff and work as a video director, so I guess we're really luck to have that talent in-house.

PUNK GLOBE:
You are also currently doing a tour of the USA. Give us details of where you have played?

Justin:
YES!!! We had so much fun last year, and this year has been going to be bigger and better again. Really exciting. Best way to keep in touch with the tour and the band while we are on the road is via our Facebook page : http:www.facebook.com/TheGoSet Anyone reading this should drop us a line and come say hi one of our shows!

PUNK GLOBE:
It looks like you have been playing mainly on the East Coast and Mid West. Any chance that this tour will expand?

Justin:
Yeah, I know....we're missing a lot of parts of the States, including the West Coast. Unfortunately, it's such a massive country that we really needed to start by building bit by bit. I can confirm 100% though, that we will be doing several shows on the west coast next year, as well as a whole bunch of new territories that we haven't been to before.

PUNK GLOBE:
Will you be bringing a supporting act with you for the tour?

Justin:
Not on this trip we are doing now. We're just playing with local acts. Some of the band's we have played with have been awesome though, and we're really keen to have played with them.

PUNK GLOBE:
What size venues have you been playing?

Justin:
A real mixture. A couple of the festivals that we played had 5-10,000, but there have been a few tiny clubs. I love those tiny venues, especially if we can manage to pack them out.

PUNK GLOBE:
It looks like you played a few festivals. How was that?

Justin:
We played Danbury Irish Festival (Sept 16) up in Connecticut, and then a series of outdoor concerts in the Midwest, including the Wildwood Festival MO (Sept 24). They were a lot of fun!

PUNK GLOBE:
Any bands that you enjoyed playing with?

Justin:
Rusty Nail and Monster Eats Manhattan at the Firebird in St Louis was a great show, and our friends Beantown Boozehouse and Mickey Rickshaw (Boston), and Alternative Ulster (New York). Really great hanging with all those guys.

PUNK GLOBE:
Did you play any shows with The Real McKenzies?

Justin:
Not on this trip....although here's a little tip from a reliable source.....it's highly likely that we are going to be doing a length Australia/Nz tour with them in Feb 2017. In the meantime we'll all be preparing our livers and getting some sleep in advance...

PUNK GLOBE:
Has there been any line up changes with The Go- Set?

Justin:
Our original bass player Mark Moran is jumping in on bass for this trip. Really excited about that. He is a founding member of the band and an awesome guy, so this tour has been really special for that reason too.

PUNK GLOBE:
How many releases do you have out?

Justin:
Seven albums and an EP.

PUNK GLOBE:
How many tracks are on Rolling Sound?

Justin:
12 tracks.

PUNK GLOBE:
Any plans for more video releases besides Bones off of Rolling Sound?

Justin:
Yeah, we've just finished two more clips for tracks from the album "Raise a Glass" and "In the Streets". Both will be up online this week.

PUNK GLOBE:
After this tour in the USA. What else do you have in store?

Justin:
We will be heading from New York to the UK for a run of shows. After that I'm going to Germany for some solo gigs, and the other guys are going to different destinations. We will meet up in Australia in November fore a National Tour leading to Christmas. Early next year, it looks like we will be touring Australia, USA, Europe and Japan - so it's going to be a busy next 12 months.

PUNK GLOBE:
Any plans to go back into the studio?

Justin:
Yeah, we have a bunch of new songs waiting to be tracked. As soon as we get some time over the Christmas break we will get around to that, and hopefully have an album out next year.

PUNK GLOBE:
Please give us your Internet addresses so the readers can keep up to date with you.

PUNK GLOBE:
Any shout outs that you would like to give?

Justin:
Yeah - to Punk Globe. For continually staying true, and the tireless support of independent touring bands. A pillar of the punk rock community. Sincerely. Thanks so much for the chat!
