Southern California's Own
SUNSHINE FACTORY
By: Ginger Coyote
I met Sunshine Factory on Twitter.. They were fun and seemed supportive so I decided to interview them.... Hope you enjoy....
Punk Globe:
Can you give us some background on the Sunshine Factory like when you formed and where you are located?
SUNSHINE FACTORY:
We formed in early 2006 in our hometown of Palmdale, Ca. John lives there still, but Jordan and myself (Corey) live in LA.
Punk Globe:
How long has the band been together?
SUNSHINE FACTORY:
We've been together for about 6 almost 7 years now. Which seems really weird to think about now, because I remember our first show in Palmdale, and first practices/jams back in our garage. Was that really almost 7 years now? Wowskies.
Punk Globe:
How did you come up with Sunshine Factory for the band?
SUNSHINE FACTORY:
Sheer desperation for a name! My brother Jordan and I were struggling to come up with a name for a while when we started out. We had gone through an assortment of names that nobody liked, and couldn't really agree on one that sounded "cool" but not corny, or assuming. One of us said what about sunshine factory? Like where we went to pre-school? For some reason that name stuck! Pure convenience!
Punk Globe:
Tell us who is in Sunshine Factory and what they play?
SUNSHINE FACTORY:
Our lineup now is John Karwoski, Jordan Judge, and Corey Judge. Two bounty hunters, and a Jawa from the desert planet of Tattoinedale. We all like to switch around on the instruments depending on the song to keep things interesting for us, but also to give different sounds into the music from each guy's playing style on an instrument. John will tend to play bass if we are playing with a fourth member, or drums if it's just the three of us, and lead guitar on the song "realize". Jordan is usually our lead guitar, but switches between that and bass, keys, and harmonies, although he does sing lead vocals on "tired smile". I usually sing lead vocals and play rhythm guitar, or keys. But I'll play bass on a couple songs, lead guitar on a couple songs, and do vocal harmonies.
Punk Globe:
Are all the members of the band original members?
SUNSHINE FACTORY:
No. We have had a few friends come in and out of the band over the years, but John, Jordan, and myself have been in the band together since 2007.
Punk Globe:
Who are some of the bands personal influences?
SUNSHINE FACTORY:
Well we all love a lot of different music styles. Some of the ones we all grew up on are The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Queen, , Pink Floyd, Rush (J.P. haha), Led Zeppelin, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, The Everly Brothers, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Hall and Oates, The B-52's, Naked Eyes, Blondie, The Smiths, Madonna, Sade, and a lot of old Jazz, and Classical music. I would say that any band, or music style you really listen to a lot will influence you in some way in your own music writing. I know we definitely listen to a lot of Weezer, The Strokes, Jamiroquai, Beach House, Fleet Foxes, The Whitest Boy Alive, Avi Buffalo, UMO, Ariel Pink, Wilco, Boz Scaggs, Sade (Corey yearns for her hand in marriage), Al Bowlly, Kenny Rogers (J.P.), Astrud Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jorobim, Ray Noble, Chet Atkins, Cliff Edwards, Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzgerald, The Ink Spots, Nino Rota, Ennio Morricone, Henry Mancini. Jordan and myself are huge movie soundtrack nerds. So, the short answer. A lot?
Punk Globe:
In 3 words how would you describe yourself?
SUNSHINE FACTORY:
That's no moon.
Punk Globe:
Has the band toured?
SUNSHINE FACTORY:
We've had the chance to do a couple mini tours up and down California between San Diego and San Francisco. And last summer we toured East and turned back around at Denver. That was really a great time for us as most of us hadn't been to any of the states we passed through before. There definitely were some incredible sights, crazy random thunderstorms, and tons of awesome people we got to meet and connect with along the way. We love being on the road. Playing in new towns. Meeting new people, bands, and seeing places and things that you likely would never have if you weren't following your passion. Definitely reminds us of why we love to tour, and makes me miss it.
Punk Globe:
Favorite venues to play?
SUNSHINE FACTORY:
Biko Garage in Isla Vista California. It's a Co-op house that hosts bands and parties and we had the chance to play there on our very first tour. It was such a great vibe, everyone was so cool and welcoming, and the place was packed! We love playing those small venues that get packed quick and become incredibly hot sweat chambers. Barely room to set your gear up and move around in! The energy at those kinds of shows is always so high, and you really feed on it while you're playing.
Punk Globe:
Favorite bands to play with?
SUNSHINE FACTORY:
We have played with a lot of bands that we really love, but among some of our favorites are Brown and Blue who we did our first tour with. Avi Buffalo, Summer Twins, Aftergloam, Smithfield Bargain, The Wildbunch, El Camino Real, Naive Thieves, Captions, Mothers Sons, and The Jamborees.
Punk Globe:
You have a new EP "Realize" out tell us about that?
SUNSHINE FACTORY:
Well we have just released an EP with five of our songs, and one Ritchie Valens cover. The songs are a mix of a couple of our older tunes that we just never got around to recording a decent version of, as well as one of our newer songs "Realize". We only had so much room on the full length due out in January so we thought this would be a cool way to get out some of the songs that we really like but couldn't fit on the album. And the cover, well just 'cause! It's available on our label page www.culdesackidsrecords.com, or you can find the link on our Facebook as well, www.facebook.com/sunshinefactoryculdesackids?fref=ts
Punk Globe:
You do a cover of the Richie Valens song "We Belong Together". How did that come about?
SUNSHINE FACTORY:
That was actually the idea of our label manager Steve Martin. We are all big fans of Ritchie, and have covered the song a couple of times live. He asked us to record it for the EP a little while back, and we were initially apprehensive about it just because we didn't know if we could pull it off, and not besmirch Mr. Valens! But after talking with Steve about it we agreed to give it a go. We had a good time doing it, and in the end I am glad he asked us to do it. We are big fans of Ritchie, so we think it's a cool way to sort of pay our respects to the memory of his music.
Punk Globe:
Is the new EP on a label or is it an independent release?
SUNSHINE FACTORY:
The EP and our upcoming full length is being released through the label we are on. Culdesac Kids Records.
Punk Globe:
Tell us about the video "Zed World Part 2"
SUNSHINE FACTORY:
Our good friend Carlos Herrera wrote and directed the videos for Zed Word Parts 1 and 2. And our friend Pauline Noriega did all the the makeup effects. Part 2 is the story in which the world has succumbed to a zombie apocalypse, yet we the dumb band geeks we are have been unaware of this, and seemingly unaffected so far. While rehearsing a zombie chick (played by Jordan's girlfriend Kim Quin) stumbles into view and catches the eye of Jordan. He becomes infatuated with her and his interest in the band wanes. Finally he leaves us and waltzes of with her, managing to get himself bitten. After he dies and "re-animates", he returns to us as a new an improved band member. Impossible to distract, and completely loyal (thanks to the chain). The video was an homage to a lot of the zombie flicks that we grew up on and are huge fans of. George Romero's films, Dawn of the Dead, Shawn of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead act and so forth. We are nerds as I mentioned, but we are lucky to have friends like Carlos Herrera, and Pauline Noriega, Steve, Lauren, Kimi, Alex, and everybody who helps us continue to be said nerds.
Punk Globe:
What is the Sunshine Factory's involvement with the video?
SUNSHINE FACTORY:
We just play our song in the video. Actually, just pretending to rehearse, and pretending to argue was pretty fun because the arguing scenes had an element of realism in them from past incidents haha.
Punk Globe:

Punk Globe:
What is in store for the Sunshine Factory for 2013?
SUNSHINE FACTORY:
We are releasing our first full length album "Electric Beach" on January 1st. So definitely check out our Facebook and label pages for info! We are happy with it and very eager to move on to new music. We're writing music for our next project now which is a collaboration with our friend Simon Tran aka "Ghost Ghost Teeth". We are very excited for this, so stay tuned for information on that as well!
Punk Globe:
Any last words for Punk Globe readers
