People Are Talking:
Catching Up With
Randy Rampage and Duane Chaos
Of Rampage
Interview By: Ginger Coyote
Punk Globe wanted to catch up with one of our favorite bands from Vancouver the one and only Rampage. We were lucky enough to get a chance to speak with the legendary Randy Rampage and the ultra talented guitarist Duane Chaos.. Please enjoy the interview
Punk Globe:
Randy, just how long have we known each other?
Randy:
35 years. We met at the Mabuhay in San Francisco in 1978 on the D.O.A first tour. And we've got together many many times in the ensuing years, Punk Globe giving us much promotion when hardly no one would touch us. And we've always had good fun together. Your line was "PEOPLE ARE TALKING". I always thought that was a great little signature for the Punk Globe. You were like the Rona Barrett of punk rock.
Punk Globe:
Wow! we met each other when we were in nursery school. It was great to see you at the 2013SFPunkhomecoming weekend. Tell us about the band?
Randy:
We're Rampage. Hard rock unit with heavy punk roots. At the San Francisco gig you saw Zippy (Pinhead) on drums, Duane (Chaos) on guitar Tim (Bitz) on bass, and me on Vocals.
Duane:
Hi Ginger. It was good to see you again. Did you like the show?
Punk Globe:
It was great seeing the band.. You guys rocked... I loved getting Tim all hot and bothered.. I loved the show. So did the crowd. But Randy is no longer playing the bass?
Randy:
For live shows I'd rather sing.
Duane:
Randy's got a history of being a vocalist and a bass player. He is a co-founder & bass player of the seminal hardcore Canadian punk band DOA. ( he's been in and out of that lineup 4 times ). He later went on to front Annihilator, Canada's most successful metal band. Over the years he's toured A LOT and has performed with thousand of musicians including the rest of us In various bands like Stress Factor 9.
Punk Globe:
Nonetheless the show rocked. What is the band doing now?
Randy:
We got a new lineup. Zippy doesn't want to play at the moment and Tim is busy with work. Duane is on guitar, and the Great Baldini (Jan Rodgerson-formerly DOA) on drums. Jan and I have played and tour together quite a bit. We are working in a new guitar player Danny Nargang (lead singer of KickAxe) for the new Album.
Duane:
We're writing material for a new album and tour. A large chunk is written and we're fine tuning it before hitting the studio.
Punk Globe:
Have you been in the recording studio with the new line up yet?
Randy:
No. – we're baking the songs live first. After all these years I like to kind of write something then sit with it for a bit to see how the live audience responds.
Duane:
I think our new lineup is very powerful as all the players have strong metal roots so we're looking forward to hearing it once we get to the studio.
Punk Globe:
Are there plans to tour in the future?
Randy:
That's the idea. We want to do a European tour after we record.
Duane:
Or do a west coast tour.
Punk Globe:
I know for a fact that the band made a big splash in the Bay Area.
Randy:
Thanks. We really enjoyed it and hope to be back soon.
Punk Globe:
I really missed seeing Susanne Tabata in San Francisco... How is she doing with her film "Bloodied But Unbowed" ? It is so bloody good.
Randy:
I heard Jason Priestley just re-did the narration for US and international markets because he liked the project. There might be some interesting screenings coming up.
Punk Globe:
Back to Rampage and the music. So when the new CD comes out, what does it look like?
Randy:
We're not actually sure we're going to do a CD in the classical sense. There's no use in that as you make one copy and that's all you need to propagate the entire earth. We're contemplating making smaller runs of CD's with different mixes of songs on them, each one unique, numbered and signed by the band. It's not that we're in this to make money, we just want the CD's to be meaningful. It has to be a package that has something in it above and beyond the music itself. That could be liner notes, giveaways, that kind of thing.
Duane:
A CD today is a transportation medium that gets used to carry the music from the studio to the first consumer. After that it just sits there and the music is distributed over the internet.
Punk Globe:
What advice do you have for younger bands trying to make it right now?
Randy:
Give up. (just kidding) Just play.
Duane:
There's no money in music so I don't even know what "make it" means. It's not like the old days when someone would sign you and you get a nice advance royalty cheque etc. I guess my advice is just do it on your own on your terms.
Punk Globe:
Any last words for Punk Globe readers?
Randy:
Be true to yourself and kick ass! No use stoppin' now.
Punk Globe would like to thank Randy Rampage and Duane Chaos for the interview... We urge you all to check out RAMPAGE when the band is playing in your area... And buy the new CD.. They Rawk!
