Egg Drop Soup
Will Blow A Hole
In the Back Of Your Head
Interview By: Spencer Robinson

It’s the middle of December, and I’m in a dark bar on the East side of Los Angeles.  There’s a crowd of people here patiently waiting, so I grab a drink and head over to the corner, where a band is setting up.  A few minutes later, Los Angeles punk rock band Egg Drop Soup explodes with a set of fast, rowdy, snotty punk rock that blows a hole in the back of my head.  This was the first night of their residency, and they continued this all out assault on the ears through the rest of the month.  The Los Angeles music scene is in a particularly good place right now, and this band is right at the center of it.  Please check out my interview with Egg Drop Soup.

Punk Globe: Thanks for the interview.  Where are you all from, and how did you end up in this band together?

Greg (Drums) and I are from Mass and actually met at summer camp, and Sammy (bass/vocals) is from Louisville, KY by way of NY. Sam and I were in another band together and wanted to start a thrashy side project, so we asked Greg if he wanted to jam with us one day. It was kind of magical and this project has taken precedence ever since.

Punk Globe: I think Egg Drop Soup is a great band name, and I already know what it refers to.  Can you give the readers an explanation?

It’s a period reference. We’ll leave the rest to your knowledge of anatomy ;)

Punk Globe: Who are some of your influences musically?

I think we’re all inspired by anything dirty and loud AF. Anything without pretense. I know we’re all huge Nirvana and PJ Harvey fans. I’m super into stuff on the metal side like Sabbath and Motorhead, but we each kind of bring out own flavor to the table.

Punk Globe: How does the songwriting process for Egg Drop Soup work?

There’s no one way we really approach it. Usually someone comes to practice with an idea and we all kind of jam on it and see what we come up with. We have a lot of voice memos with different bass and guitar riffs that we send each other when we’re feeling inspired. I think the important thing is that we have so much fun collaborating and we communicate ideas really well.

Punk Globe: You recently released a 4-track live EP.  Why did you choose a live release for your debut?

Aaron Zee and Travis Pavur came to us with the idea because they loved the energy of our shows and wanted to re-create that for an EP. It was super fun we threw a big show in their studio and I think you can really feel the crazy energy when you listen.

Punk Globe: The video for “Partying Alone” is fantastic.  Can you tell me a little about the concept?

Sammy and I were talking and we really liked the idea of this old woman in a sea of youth just not giving any fucks. We wanted to to something inspiring (for women especially), and not super typical for a punk video. So it’s kind of an “F you” to convention, ageism, and people pleasing.

Punk Globe: I’ve found the music scene in Los Angeles to be really amazing right now.  How do you feel about it?

It’s great! We love the friends we’ve made and there is so much talent. Anyone who says music sucks now is listening to too much top 40 and doesn’t go to the shows we do, because people are making some really interesting, creative stuff and we’re happy to be a part of that.

Punk Globe: Do you have plans to tour in 2019?

Yes, we’re heading down to Austin in March. More details tba!
