For the longest time now I have been seeing the name Will Sid Smith on Twitter and Facebook so I decided to find out more about him... What I discovered was that he was a very ambitious and talent musician who is developing quite a following in the UK. So, I asked him to do the following interview for Punk Globe...
|
WILL SID SMITH: First can I say thank you for asking me, I was really amazed! I hope your readers find it interesting. I guess I’m still in my early years being only 16, almost 17, but I’ve had a pretty regular childhood, go to school, play music and hang out with friends. Musically, I took violin lessons from about 6 but didn't enjoy it much; had a karaoke machine when I was about 8; enjoyed singing in the school choir in competitions
Punk Globe: Describe yourself in three words?
WILL SID SMITH: Unusual Cheeky Complicated
Punk Globe: You are now 16 years old. At what age did you play your first gig?
WILL SID SMITH: I’ll be 17 when this comes out (28th May). Started doing open mic when I was 14. Also played my first proper gig then, at a local place called The Forum (it’s just won an award from NME for Best Small Venue in the UK). That was awesome
Punk Globe: You have a nice clear pop oriented voice. Have you done any vocal training?
WILL SID SMITH: I had one singing lesson a couple of years ago but no other training.
WILL SID SMITH: Yeah I know who he is, other people have told me the same thing and to be honest I cant see it but its nice to hear. I love his version of Hallelujah, it was one of the first songs I ever played in public
Punk Globe: Do you write your own material?
WILL SID SMITH: Yes, every song of mine is mine. I haven’t really tried writing with anyone else before, I just like to work alone.
Punk Globe: Besides vocals and playing guitar.. Do you play any other instruments?
WILL SID SMITH: I play keyboards but i don’t play them live often because I normally get worried that I’ll mess up playing, plus they’re too big to carry around to gigs.
WILL SID SMITH: I play with other people in my music tech class but I always do gigs by myself, it’d be good to play with a band sometime though.
Punk Globe: Are you signed to a label?
WILL SID SMITH: No. I was signed to a label based in Milton Keynes but found it hard to work with them and there were competitions at the time I wanted to take part in so I broke up with them.
Punk Globe: Do you have any releases out?
WILL SID SMITH: Yes I do, my e.p. called ‘29’ that I finished recording at the end of last year, is on Soundcloud
Punk Globe: Who are some of your influences?
WILL SID SMITH: So many artists have influenced me over the past few years but I’ve got to say a song by KT Tunstall really inspired me to pick up a guitar and singers like Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey made me want to sing, but listening to songs by Norah Jones, Goo Goo Dolls, Damien Rice and Michelle Branch really made me want to become an artist.
WILL SID SMITH: I haven’t played live in a while but I used to do two or three gigs each month. I took a break to concentrate on school but I’ll get back to it in June when my exams are over
Punk Globe; Have you played outside of the UK?
WILL SID SMITH: Never. I would love to play around the U.S and South America because they’re places I’ve always loved the sound of.
Punk Globe: So you have not played in the USA yet. Has your music gotten any airplay in America?
WILL SID SMITH: I have not physically played in the USA. But my songs have had some radio play over there, and I’ve a lot of followers in North and South America.
Punk Globe: Have you ever played Rebellion?
WILL SID SMITH: No, never thought of it. Haven’t been able to go to it either yet. Do you think they’d like my sound?
Punk Globe: I would assume since it is a festival they would be open to all kinds of music.. Have you ever thought about auditioning for Britain's Got Talent?
WILL SID SMITH: I have thought about it but I just haven’t stuck with the idea because I have no intention of becoming a pop star, just an artist. Also, its difficult to explain but I kind of worried if success might mean I had to "sell out" or appear to be something I'm not. I'd rather be respected for my music than become a manufactured celebrity.
WILL SID SMITH: I think she did well going on there because in her first audition, literally everyone was against her before she started singing, then she won everyone over and became huge, and doing what she wanted to do at the same time, so good for her.
Punk Globe: Were you a fan of Amy Winehouse?
WILL SID SMITH: I wouldn’t say I’m a fan of hers but if one of her songs came on the radio or my ipod, I’d never skip it or listen to something else. She was great.
WILL SID SMITH: Deffo. My website www.willsidsmith.com links to all my online music and videos I’m also on Twitter, Reverbnation, Soundcloud, Facebook, Myspace and YouTube. Just use /willsidsmith on any of them and you’ll find me.
Punk Globe: What does 2012 hold in store for you?
WILL SID SMITH: To be honest I have no idea, let’s just wait and see. It’s exciting that way
Punk Globe: Does the Sid in your name come from Sid Vicious?
WILL SID SMITH: It’d be cool to say yes but, no. My real full name is William Sidney Smith. Somebody already used Will Smith so my Dad suggested I use Will Sid Smith. Don’t like it much but it googles really well!
WILL SID SMITH: Sure, if anyone loves my stuff how about getting me a couple of tour dates in America? – see you soon ;)
Check out Will Sid Smith on the Internet... He is as ambitious as he is talented... It is all a matter of time before he hits it big... Just remember you first read about him in Punk Globe..
