|
TIMM CARNEY : Wow Ginger this is a surprise! I grew up in Rhode Island and I went to art school there studying Theater and Film and Video. I made some small films and was part of a Public Access TV show there that ran for years. I moved to New York and lived in the East Village for a while. I did some commercials and a little modeling but mostly went to clubs and parties.
Punk Globe: We met when you lived in San Francisco. What brought you to the Bay Area in the first place..
TIMM CARNEY : I was working on a feature called "A Matter of Degrees" that was shot in Providence and I met Peter Moody. It was the first feature for both of us. I was planning a trip to San Francisco to hang out with him when a room in his flat opened up so instead of a visit I moved in.
Punk Globe: Tell us about your first Industry job in San Francisco?
TIMM CARNEY : My first job in San Francisco was "Spirit of '76". I was hired as a talent driver. I drove the actors to and from the set and to dance classes and stuff. The film was shot in Alameda and we were there for an entire summer. It was a lot of fun and filled with fun people. The cast and crew were all great and many of us became great friends. We spent a lot of time in 70's outfits listening to 70's music. It was one of the most fun films I have ever worked on.
Punk Globe: You worked on the film Spirit of 77. Tell us about the all star cast in the film?
TIMM CARNEY : The cast was so cool! David Cassidy was one of the leads along with Olivia D'abo and Geoff Hoyle. It was an all star cast! Leif Garret, Red Kross, Rob Reiner, the great Carl Reiner, Julie Brown, Barbara Bain and Iron Eyes Cody. I ended up becoming friends with Leif and the McDonalds. Carl Reiner told me I was funny! One of the really fun things I did on that movie was take Hustle lessons with Leif and Olivia. My hands are in the film when you see a close up of hands they are my hands. I guess I have nicer hands than David Cassidy.
Punk Globe: You worked with some pretty famous offspring on the film Roman Coppola (Francis Ford Coppola) and Susie Landau (Martin Landau and Barbara Bain) . Tell us about that?
TIMM CARNEY : Roman was the Executive Producer of the film. He is pretty mellow and has great taste in music! Susie and I became good friends. I ended up working as her assistant during post production. We are still friends.
Punk Globe: You did a video for the San Francisco band The Witnesses. I was in that video. How did that come about?
TIMM CARNEY : Peter Moody was responsible for that! I just help him out with the post production. It is a fun video. I hadn't thought of that one in years! You were a bride!!!
Punk Globe: I remember I demanded a "Hot Groom" I remember... Had you known Liz Owens prior to the video?
TIMM CARNEY : I didn't. That was the first time I had ever met her.
Punk Globe: You have worked closely with Peter Moody.. Tell us how that all came about?
TIMM CARNEY : When Peter and I met in Providence we hit it off immediately. We liked the same bands and same movies and made each other laugh. When I moved to San Francisco we made some fun videos and worked on a lot of films and commercials together. We have been friends for over 20 years now. When I am in San Francisco I always stop by his house for a martini or so and a lot of laughs! I was very involved with his movie "Olive or Twist".
TIMM CARNEY : There are so many! We shot some footage one Sunday afternoon that memorable as we had no permits and Kriss Kross was dancing topless on the steps of the elementary school on Haight St. I had to do some really fast talking with the cops! Dwight Dolliver has hours of footage that we shot at shows all over! I think one of the most interesting things we did was shoot the band in Mistress Carole's S&M torture chamber in her Dungeon. Of course we got great interviews with Lenore and Punk Rock Patty. I did take some footage of you singing with a lipstick camera attached to your mic that I ended up turning into stills for a show I had in the old Casanova. I think our trip to LA and San Diego was also a highlight! In San Diego we stayed in a motel room that was 33 steps to a liquor store!
Punk Globe: We can't forget Vito's birthday in Cotati with White Trash Debutantes, Tim Armstrong, The Insaints and the fabulous Ruby....
You also became involved with another San Francisco band Frightwig. Tell us about that?
TIMM CARNEY : That was a lot fun! Deanna was my neighbor and I used to hang out with her ex-husband Stefan Chirazi alot. She asked/told me to be a dancer for the band. We did a bunch of shows. The biggest one we did was the Great American Music Hall. I love Frightwig they are all great. I went to Mia's wedding and Flipper played! I was afraid of Cecelia for a while until one day she made me laugh so hard I almost peed myself. We did a lot of stuff with Jennifer "Whiskey-Anne" Buck too. She and I would always end up rolling around on the floor. One of the songs was "A Man's Gotta Do What a Man's Gotta Do" and I would strip to that and end up in my skimpy underwear.
Punk Globe: Your flat on Belvedere Street was notorious for fun parties... Tell us about some real noteworthy ones?
TIMM CARNEY : That place is famous for wild parties! Rudolf Nureyev and Margo Fonteyn were arrested on the roof in the 60's! We had huge parties. We hired the band Enrique to sing on a stage we made in the living room for one party. I had a room with a working fireplace and used to burn old wooden kitchen chairs in it. Anyone could show up! Matt Dillon was at one of them along with I think every band playing in San Francisco at the time. You brought Pylon to one of my birthday parties. I always loved when Penelope Huston would come. Carey Tennis would write about them in the SF Weekly. He wrote on article about a party where a mannequin was thrown out of a window and scared a couple of tourists walking by as they thought it was a suicide. There was a woman who lived in the flat below us I used to feel sorry for. We ended up hiring a doorman because they became to famous. I met so many great people at those parties!
Punk Globe: What made you decide to leave San Francisco?
TIMM CARNEY : I was living with Paul Arenburg and a crazy boyfriend in Hayes Valley in another wild apartment building. We had huge building wide parties there. I was getting tired of having parties all the time and my boyfriend was getting crazier and crazier. He wouldn't leave so I did.
Punk Globe: Tell us what kept you busy after that?
TIMM CARNEY : I moved to Providence and found an apartment in a Gothic mansion. It was such a cool place. I worked for Brown University and I wrote for a couple of magazines. I also worked in a theater in Providence called the Providence Black Rep. that was started by a friend of mine. I then met my current partner Peter Cluff and we moved to Boston where I worked for Harvard University.
Punk Globe: What made you decide to move to Los Angeles ?
TIMM CARNEY : Peter's father died and we inherited a house in the suburbs and hated it! We both thought Boston was a drag. We thought about moving to San Francisco or New York but we decided to check out LA. We came for a visit and decided moving to LA was the right thing to do.
Punk Globe: Tell the readers about your first apartment in Hollywood?
TIMM CARNEY : That place was Huge!! It was on the top floor of a building in Hancock Park and had once been Clara Bow's. The previous tenant had been a famous celebrity lawyer who went to prison.
Punk Globe: You are back working in the film industry tell us about some of your gigs?
TIMM CARNEY : I have been doing some acting. I have also been working on screen plays. I am working on a play right now with a guy who was a member of the Factory. I am also working on re-mounting a show I produced in San Francisco. It is called Unnatural Acts and it is a vaudeville show. I work with a woman named Dalia Vidor and we plan on having it up and running by the end of the summer. I of course have been steadily writing for Punk Globe!
Punk Globe: You have also teamed up with film maker Michael Frost .. Give us the whole scoop?
TIMM CARNEY : Michael is a riot! We met when I auditioned for him. He and his partner Charles Wright wrote a script called "Shut Ins" it is going to star Erica Gavin from "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" and Vixen. Michael and I wrote a script titled "Scene Missing" that is being passed around producers now. We are working on a new one titled "Free Money" that is a comedy about the lottery. I just did a music video he made for a band called "Trampin for the Lord"
Punk Globe: You are also working in front of the camera.. Tell us some of the roles where we may have seen you?
TIMM CARNEY : I was in two really funny movies by Rick Poko and Dan West called "Mosturd" and the sequel "Retardead" they are so sick and funny and available on NetFlix. If you are a fan of fake reality TV I have been in a bunch of them. 1000 Ways to Die and Operation Repo are two of them.
Punk Globe: What kind of roles did you get sent to audition for?
TIMM CARNEY : I get called in for Mormons a lot! I also get called for crazy people, germaphobes and evil butlers! I guess I have a look that go either way.
Punk Globe: Can you tell the readers about your encounter with Charlie Sheen?
TIMM CARNEY : Peter and I were in a movie called "She Wants Me" and were in a scene with Charlie. It was shot a day or two after he had one of his breakdown in the Plaza. The paparazzi were all over the place. We were dressed in suits for our scene and when we broke for lunch they got it into their heads that we were Charlie's lawyers. We got stalked! Afterwards we had a good laugh with Charlie about it!
Punk Globe: Who are some of your favorite bands?
TIMM CARNEY : Patti Smith!!! I love her! Amy Winehouse, Zavuki Mu, Hole and its incarnations, The White Trash Debutantes (I want a Kennedy that's hot in bed), L7, The Pixies, Pansy Division, The Ramones, The Itchies, Frightwig, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, PJ Harvey so many!!!
Punk Globe: Tell us some of your favorite hangouts?
TIMM CARNEY : One of my new favorite hangouts now is The Drawing Room in Los Feliz. I always make Zeitgeist my first stop in San Francisco. I used to love CBGB's.. I went there for the clubs closing night show. It seems so many of my favorite places are closing. I am on the look out for the next favorite!!
Punk Globe: Lets hope The Drawing Room has a long lease... Tell us about some of the gala events you have attended?
TIMM CARNEY : I have been going to a lot of Gallery openings lately. My partner Peter was just shot for a photo show by Alex Prager and the opening for that was star studded! The last one I was at was the party for Angie Bowie with you and Cherry Vanilla! I love gallery opening though, you meet some really interesting people!
TIMM CARNEY : I'm doing the play "Dial M for Marlene" that will open in the end of June in Hollywood. Unnatural Acts my show will be starting at the end of the summer here in LA and who knows what else!
Punk Globe: What about your Blog? Please give us the 411!
TIMM CARNEY : I started it a couple of moths ago. http://timmcarneydamnit.blogspot.com/ It has short articles about entertainment, arts, performers and complaints. It seems to be popular in Eastern Europe of all places! I also have a reader from Libya. I try to write everyday try being the operative word.
Punk Globe: Any last words for Punk Globe readers?
TIMM CARNEY : You'll look better in a sweater washed in Woolite!
Punk Globe would like to thank Timm Carney for the fun interview...
