THE SICK LIVERS
Motors, Women, Drugs, Booze and Killing
By: Jools Green
I have to confess, I know very little about, ‘The Sick Livers', aside from them playing "Gutter Level, Garage Punk and Rock 'n' Roll", that there are five of them, Ginge, VJ, DJ, Matty and Dai and they hail from Rumney Rock City, South Wales. ‘Motors' Women, Drugs, Booze and Killing' is their debut album, originally released on CD earlier in the year now, due to popularity it is being re-released as a limited edition 12" on black vinyl. I can certainly understand the popularity of their work, the album is fast paced and fun, with strong clear vocals that are brimming with bolshie attitude, catchy Punk and Roll riffs with a good measure of tongue in cheek humor, the eight tracks span a short, sharp, twenty four minutes, all of which flow nicely after each other. Opening with 'Gimme The Drugs' which begins with a fabulous bass run just before the guitars kick in, a sing along chorus and sleazy riffs. Next the fast paced, chugging and catchy 'Get Ready' , keeps the mood up, get ready to join in with the "Woo Yeahs!" on the chorus, the track finishes up with a great guitar segment to the close. The bands theme tune, ‘Sick Liver' has a down tuned sleazy Southern Roll feel to it, a great track. The riffs come in with a much more of an aggressive swing on, 'Blood On Your Halo', this about as serious as these guys get, a strong message for the finger pointers of this world. The Sick Livers are smiling in the face of adversity with 'Cocaine Jeans', great guitar breakout midway. A big can of Sleaze and Roll is opened up on 'Seven Year Itch', I love the lower key to this and the bass lines towards the end are pretty sexy. A fast furious tempo for ‘Hell Bent On You' and more great bass lines, lovely guitar licks and heavily garnished with plenty of "Woo Woo's" in the chorus, a superb track. The best track, for me , is the final one, ‘Bummed to Death', where humor is at its zenith , I couldn't help thinking of some the hilarious offerings from Turbonegro that it reminded me of, sleazy riffs and lyrics that had tears of laughter running down my cheeks every time the chorus kicked in. After the final track, a humorous, pseudo- disparaging outro ‘Lee Loves Us ‘had me rolling the floor with laughter. A great tongue in cheek release from five guys who don't take themselves too seriously, they just want to make catchy enjoyable music ……………. and they succeed!!
