Any band from Detroit has to be mindful of the past musical history of the city.Gods in all that is even remotely fast, loud, and soulful, MC5,Iggy, Alice etc... Now whether a band chooses to ignore, embrace or just bite off it is the question. The Ruiners have embraced its hometown rock n roll hero's and not only honored them but have made fans of many of the musicians they grew up watching. A Ruiners live performance is the stuff you tell your kids about, and this is where they do things best. The bands last record Happy Birthday Bitch did a wonderful job capturing the bands energy and excitement. How in the heck can producer Tino Gross (Funky D Records,Howling Diablos) expect to top it? They decided to write songs right in the studio and record em live, fresh off the self. Risky approach for most but the end result with The Ruiners latest platter "Shake Rattle & Moan" is in my opinion the best effort yet form the band. You will hear a band let loose with more a vintage sound, wider vocal expanses, deeper grooves, and like everything The Ruiners do, Its loaded with an extra large portion of fun. Quite a few sing alongs here-- like "Sluttin' it Up "which has a classic "Glimmer Twins' feel to it. 'Eat Your Heart Out ' a rave up that screams Sonny and Cher if they were Sid and Nancy backed by Eddie Cochran on guitar. 'Fangul To Love" has a three chord punk chop to it and a mesmerizing quality to the chorus's. Haul Ass has all the swagger and swing of a Tijuana stripper and a really smoking guitar solo to boot.HOG,,, once again The Ruiners write a song I can really identify with, love the rockin' Cheap Trick like melody the song has too.I Love You is a rock n roll dance tune if I have ever heard one, fantastic lead and back up vocals. "Shake Rattle & Moan" is a little prelude leading into "O?? ????? ??????" ( English translation She Likes Tigers) which is Nina Friday's( vocals) time to take the lead on the mic although I don't understand Russian its pretty darn cool and fits right in with the bands wild persona. "Useless College Degree" is bluesy rocker with kick ass back up vocals and will be sure to make you smile with a story many of us would be familiar with. "Yer Beating Me Down" has defiant Detroit fuck the world sound, and will a be hit with live audiences for sure. Now I save my favorite two tunes for last. "Stingy Girl" starts off with a shoe gazing guitar riff and swinging beat adds in smokey sounding keyboard and soon you have a jam that rolls like the hills. "Supersonic Superman" is hands down my favorite tune on "Shake Rattle & Moan... " The guitar, lyrics vocals are just twistin' the night away, very reminiscent of The Cramps. I can picture Lux and Ivy smiling approval on this one. Rob (drums), Rick (Vocals, harmonica)), Justin( guitar), Liz( bass ) and Nina Friday( vocals) and guesting on keyboards Jimmy Bones( Kid Rock) have set the bar even higher with "Shake Rattle & Moan" not just for themselves but for every band coming out with a record anytime soon out of Detroit. Love the varied sounds textures, and grooves here. This records has immediately went into my favorites bin.Check it for yourself and I'm sure you'll will agree.
