The Purple Church are a quartet out of Oklahoma City. Their 3 song EP 'Twin Lakes' is what one would want to come out of the infamously conservative Great Planes. Creative people in straight laced outer communities have to create their own culture as a foundation to whatever creative expression they choose (if nothing else, out of self defense) and these works can be remarkably self individualized for this very reason. The Twin Lakes EP is a fair example. Their rhythm section is solid and their lyrics are intriguing and thoughtful. They sound a bit like a mash up of The Blue Oyster Cult and early Meat Puppets. Fans of 60s garage rock, psychedelic rock, maximalist art, and as much as I hate to say it: grunge should check these guys out. My top pick off this EP is 'Your Own Private Landfill', a song no doubt penned about an excessively messy bedroom and the hidden corpse of a hoarder. The first lines are flatly delivered, "The trash is taking over / Spreading from it's pile / When the paramedics get here / They'll move single file." After a pretty intense build up, the last lines are accompanied by an additional layer of shrieking vocals, repeated a few times over for emphasis, "When you die / They'll go through / Your room."
