Sweden – the land of IKEA, Volvo, ABBA, blonds, and darkass music that'll make you want to cry and mosh at the same time. Thankfully for us, The Lost Poets keep up the latter tradition with their new EP. Hailing from Stockholm, the Lost Poets' Insubordia is basically the soundtrack to the coolest nightmare you ever had. The shadowy, sludge rock sound of the duo is perfect in its lo-fi, industrial sound, and is perfectly complemented by guitarist/singer David Rosengren's Chris-Cornell-goes-goth vocals.
Insubordia introduces itself with "Ode to K," a song that describes the band in a 3:50 nutshell – dark, sweeping, operatic, and intense. "Lying Down" is creepy grunge at its finest, while definite highlight "Die To Live" is like a self-contained rock opera. The song starts out acoustic and pensive, with a dreamy ambiance that echoes throughout the various style changes of the song. Picking up in the middle for some swampy metal coolness, "Die To Live" is a musical story, complete with an intro, climax, and denouement.
The title track employs steady, hypnotizing guitars harping on a single note, making the music sound like a mantra of sorts. Though the song is lo-fi, it's that minimalist quality that makes "Insubordia" so powerful. "Inside the Cage" wraps up the EP in the form of a surreal instrumental, lasting only for a minute and hailing the end of seventeen minute trip you just went through.
The Lost Poets have only begun – their unique sound in an oversaturated music world is a breath of fresh air, and the EP only parches the desire for more of their music. The band's LP will hopefully be following soon, so in the meantime, get your intense on and immerse yourself in the Swedish twilight zone known as Insubordia.
