The Hip Priests
Black Denim Blitz
Cd Review By: Dominic Daley
OK lets just declare this a no bullshit, blow smoke up the bands ass free zone for the duration of this here review and all you're gonna' get from me is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help me God!
In every end of year top ten from New York to London and Paris To Moscow one band should hold that honour and that band is the Hip Priests with the record 'Black Denim Blitz'.
What you have here is thirteen songs of high energy, bullshit free, no nonsense, fucked up garage punk rock and roll. From the air raid Siren that opens 'Vokacoma Casanova' to the final crescendo on 'Saints Of Excess' this is a rocket fueled ride that excites like no other record has managed this year and I doubt none will even come close and that's no idle challenge just a fact.
It's full tilt, crude, brutal and uncompromising but my God its just about as good as hard rockin' punk goes. The spirit of the Asheton brothers is coursing through every vein in every track on offer. the controversial bombast of the supreme 'Motherfucker Superior' is simply a joy to behold. the songwriting has taken an upward trajectory from the last album that in itself was pretty damn good but 'Flat out And Fucked Up', 'Instant Delinquent' and '20,000 Watts Of Lust' will blow you away but they don't come close to some of the tracks on offer. A special mention must go to the magnificently named 'Zero Fucks Given' which channels that Asheton spirit in the hypnotic groove and I defy you not to feel the rhythm as it grooves and gyrates like a motherfucker as it enters your head. It's just about as good as it gets. As complete a song as you'll hear ever! Yes I said ever and I mean it man, this is a monster of a record and 'Zero Fucks Given' is pure venom.
I'm seriously trying to play down my excitement here and not build this up beyond any reasonable expectations but once you hear the unbelievable 'Treat Me Like Dirt' then you'll realise it's futile and you'll know I'm right. This record should elevate this band to the top table as songs like 'Your Bands Shit' or 'Survival Of The Shittest' are without peers.
The greasy, dirty biker anthem 'Jesus Died So We Could Ride' has the filthiest bass run known to rock as the song explodes and the gang vocals on the chorus will have you fist pumping in seconds. This record is uncompromising, fiercely independent and utterly superb the Hip Priests have smashed it and obliterated any opposition as they become the undisputed kings of the hill and close all album of the year competitions because this is the daddy of them all.
Expect a 'Black Denim Blitz' to rain down on you and win you over because this is just about as good as punked up garage rock gets. If I were to tell you what every track was like we'd be here all fuckin' day and that wouldn't leave any time for me to play this record again. Just go and buy it then welcome your favorite filthed up, fucked off, outsiders into your collection. Album of the year? By a country mile.
