HOLLYWOOD MONSTERS
Interviewed By: Ginger Coyote
For the last couple of weeks I have been chatting with Timmy DeRella bassist for London's fabulous The DeRella's.. They have a a new CD coming out called "Hollywood Monsters" and they are loads of fun... I hope you all enjoy my interview with Timmy....
Punk Globe: When did you form The DeRella's?
Timmy: The band was formed in 2007. Robbie and I played together in our first band - a kind of glam disaster explosion called The Heartbreak Angels. He tracked me down to talk about playing some gigs together again and we started from there.
Punk Globe: Who is in the band?
Timmy: We are:
Robbie DeRella (ex Vibrators) - vox and rhythmn guitar
Timmy DeRella - bass and vox
Tommy DeRella - drums
Luca DeRella - guitar and vox
Punk Globe: Has the line-up been pretty consistent?
Timmy: Yes, we've all been mates for years
Punk Globe: Where does the band call home?
Timmy: We all know each other from living in London, although half the band live in Brighton now. If Punk Globe readers don't know Brighton, its on the south coast of England, about an hour south of London. Its a cool place, with a great music and arts scene. All our recording is done in Brighton, but we're still a sleazy band from Soho at heart.
Punk Globe: How did you come up with The DeRellas as the band name?
Timmy: Lou Reed used to call Andy Warhol 'Drella' - a kind of cross between Cruella DeVil and Dracula. We loved the name but wanted to give it more of an Italian New York mobster family feel.
Punk Globe: How would you best describe The DeRellas?
Timmy: In yer face rock n roll - a cross between the New York Dolls and The Ramones.
Punk Globe: Who are your influences?
Timmy: The Dolls and The Ramones of course, and also bands like the Damned, The Pistols, The Clash, Generation X and the Dead Boys
Punk Globe: How is the scene in England?
Timmy: There's a really strong scene actually, which is really energising. The UK is very DIY at the moment. Lots of bands and fanzines doing it all themselves. It really fits in with our punk ethic.
Punk Globe: Do you have a particular venue that you enjoy play at?
Timmy: I love the Prince Albert pub in Brighton. Its a small steamy venue, with a great rock n roll vibe.
Punk Globe: Any bands that you like to play with?
Timmy: We played with The Bellrays not long ago. They were so cool, one of the best live bands I've seen. We had a blast with The Germs and ended up drinking with them all night. Pat Smear asked us for a copy of our album, Hollywood Monsters - how cool! And our first ever gig was with Hanoi Rocks - great way to start
Punk Globe: Have you toured much and I know you have a new CD coming out..
Timmy: We have been slowly building a following. The gigs have been going really well - we're getting a great reaction from crowds.
Tell us about that?
Timmy: The album HOLLYWOOD MONSTERS is out on CrushWorld Records, our own record label. We have distribution with Code 7 via Plastic Head in the UK. The album rocks - and its had great reviews. It sounds very English with some New York punk thrown in. Bombsite said we reminded him of when he first saw the New York Dolls in Liverpool back in '73.
Punk Globe: Do you have any web addresses you would like to share with Punk Globe readers?
Timmy: Our myspace of course - www.myspace.com/thederellas1
Punk Globe: Any thoughts on Amy Winehouse?
Timmy: Amy's cool. She's real and has real talent and she's her own person making her own mistakes. None of this x-factor manufactured image, manufactured sound, minimum talent, maximum profit shit.
Punk Globe: Tell us what is in store for the band in 2010?
Timmy: 2010 is the year of The DeRellas. We are pushing Hollywood Monsters as hard as possible. In March we're playing all over Europe, in August we're recording some new tracks for our next album and then in September we're doing more gigs in France and Germany, followed by a visit to the West Coast of the US to play some gigs in late Sept/early October. We're unleashing Hollywood Monsters on the world! It should be a blast.
Punk Globe: Any parting words for the readers???
Timmy: Stay Free, Stay Pretty
