I have a leather jacket hanging in my basement, its being preserved for which ever child or grandchild of mine who wants it for future use.The only condition is you take it , you wear it, you don't wanna wear you give it back. Its my old jacket and doesn't fit me by a long shot but it holds memories, ( and an odd smell) that I want who ever wears it to appreciate. At the bottom of the jacket scrawled in red pain are the word" Ask Not What You can Do For Your Country,Whats Your Country Been Doing To You" Words The Avengers sung more than 30 years ago and it rings true louder than ever today. The song Amerikan In Me from the long out of print and rare "Pink Album"is where those word's came form and the moment I heard that song along with their far superior version of the Stones "Paint It Black" I had to find the record.Luck got me that record in the used bin back in 1988 for about $5.00. Fast forward a couple of decades and financial needs had me selling on eBay for a small fortune, and thinking I would never own the records again. I got alot money for the record but I was truly sad to let go of such a great and in my mind one of the greatest records of the 70's ( released in 83 but covered recordings from 1977-1979) I did have the Died For Your Sins release with some newer stuff and live cuts on it so I didn't have to go cold turkey. But hearing that the "Pink Album" had been re-issued and was including a second disc with more live cuts and outtakes had me frothing at the mouth.
Happy to say the band finally settling the legal disputes that kept this record from being widely available and being a the huge influence it should have been in its time and forward has saw the light on Water Records this past May. And .. best of all no one has tried to "clean it up" The recordings retain the gritty raw and flawed charmed of the original. This , and of course the brilliant songs like White Ni**er,We Are The One,Thin White Line, aww hell all 14 songs kill not one dud, no filler and no crap at all. If your into punk and pride yourself on the history then this record is essential.
Disc two hits just as hard as the first disc kicking off with Teenage Rebel and Friends of Mine and a previous version of White Ni**er raw studio version and rehearsals . Rolling into the live tracks you get the much written and talked about show with the then phoning in and tires Sex Pistols at Winterland Ballroom where they basically blew the blokes off the stage, this version of I Believe in Me will have you believing they should have been much bigger ( had they lasted) the headliners. I'm not a big fan of live recordings most times they wind up to clean or too grubby sounding... these strike a great balance. Able to hear the intensity, the emotion and yeah even the songs.Penelope Houston, Greg Ingraham,Danny Furious,Jimmy Wilsey and other former members of The Avengers will probably never get the recognition they deserve but at least more people and fans of truly great music will get a chance to own some of the best ever from not only the era but all time.
