Sydzilla

gives PunkrPrincess The Bands History

Interview By: PunkrPrincess

PUNK GLOBE:
Tell us how Sydzilla started!

Sydzilla:
I have always written & composed dark Rock n Roll/B-Movie/Horror punk/Goth music for TV/Film & Media for around 20 years or so for XGYPSY music. Ever since I was a kid, I loved old 50s Rock n Roll from my parents record collection, from Elvis to Gene Vincent, from Eddie Cochran to Dick Dale & always loved the dark undercurrent what lied beneath. I was resurrected as "Syd" the guitarist in 2009 in the band "Puppetmaster", with songs like "My name is Death, Soul Suicide & Sweet Dreams(cover)" See Video links below.

PUNK GLOBE:
What other bands have you started? and how do they compare to Sydzilla?

Sydzilla:
I formed "Puppetmaster" in 2009 with old friend & Junk Rock n Roll band "UFX's frontman "Dunk Rock", Puppetmaster was a heavier goth incarnation of early Syd Zilla. In 2011,I wrote & recorded a bunch of songs with a twisted psychobilly edge in comparison to the goth metal Puppetmaster style, but rather than bring it out as a solo Syd Zilla project, I formed "Boneyard Zombies" with Dunk Rock (vocals) & punk legends "One Way System's Tommy Couch (drums) & Andy Wilkinson (Bass). We headlined & toured in 2012 with bands such as "Resurex, Vince Ripper & the Rodent show, Dropout Wives" etc, finishing off in our home town at the Rebellion punk festival. To coincide with the tour, we released our debut album, "Death, Rattle & Roll" which had great reviews but only released a limited number of CDs which sold out at Rebellion & our last "Halloween Hell Night" shows. All members of the Zombies have their own different ongoing projects but always in stay touch & looking to a new album in 2015/2016.

PUNK GLOBE:
Can you describe the music making process?

Sydzilla:
When I write music, I'll have 2 or 3 different boxes, one for TV & film soundtracks, one for other artists or bands & one for "Syd Zilla", all have the "Psycho Syd" stamp on them. The process of making music varies depending on what comes first, lyrics, melody, concept or how many tequilas that Iv'e had. I usually know within minutes that the song is rockin' or not.

PUNK GLOBE:
How do you describe your music to people?

Sydzilla:
Dark Rock n Roll, Psychobilly, Horror punk is how people have described it so that's cool. I am inspired, not only, by certain music & musicians, but by horror/B-movie films too. I think the two go hand in hand & there is a magic about that! I have a massive collection of all these movies & am a huge fan of Hammer films with Christopher Lee & Peter Cushing. There's a seductive style & feel about all these movies that can never be replicated or re-made & inspire me always.

PUNK GLOBE:
Which famous musicians do you admire? Why?

Sydzilla:
Brian Setzer, Dick Dale, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, the Cramps, Link Ray, the Crazy world of Arthur Brown, the Keytones, Roy Brown, Hank Mizell, the Cadillacs, Joe Johnson, Leroy Bowman, Johnny Kid & the Pirates, Gene Vincent, the Frantics, Jackie Lowell to mention a few. These are just some of the musicians that I admire for the reason that when Rock n Roll came out in the 50's, it was classed as the Devil's music & as years go by, it seems to have an even deeper & darker feel to it the more that time passes by. Most of these artists represent that generation & inspired me as a writer & musician still wanna make me rock!

PUNK GLOBE:
What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?

Sydzilla:
Don't sign anything, wear a condom, enjoy the ride, make music for yourselves & always eat your vegetables.

PUNK GLOBE:
Describe your first instrument. Other instruments.

Sydzilla:
I started as a drummer & I supposed it never left me really, so I smash the shit outta my drums every chance I get. Apart from guitar & drums, I can play a few instruments (Bass, keyboards, piano, harmonica etc) I wouldn't consider myself a master of them but it comes in handy when composing full arrangements.

PUNK GLOBE:
When and why did you start playing?

Sydzilla:
I started playing at the age of 14, playing drums in bars for anyone that would have me (artists, bands, comedians, strippers) you name it, I was a Rock n Roll slut! My parents bought me a Kay (Les Paul) style guitar when I was 15 & had a part time job handling glass in a double glazing company. Carrying the newly cut glass, it sliced my fingers & when I gigged in the bars in the evening, my guitar strings would open up my cuts on my fingers & used to bleed all over my hands, arms & all the way up my fretboard. The watching crowd thought this was great & part of the show & expected "the guitarist with bleeding hands" to do it every night... Fuck that!

PUNK GLOBE:
How often and for how long do you practice?

Sydzilla:
I never really practice now as I work in the studio most days & nights so never seem to drag my lazy ass to practice. I'm not big on rehearsing & like to keep it spontaneous. Rehearsing with Boneyard Zombies (Tommy, Andy & Dunk) is always a blast though! When we get together, it can get a little crazy & a great blowout as we turn into total animals when we hit the beer & Tequilla.

PUNK GLOBE:
What do you practice - exercises, new tunes, etc.?

Sydzilla:
I have an acoustic guitar hung up in my living room & just randomly, twiddle on it to exercise & try & make myself a better player. I explore alternative tunings for different riffs & licks.

PUNK GLOBE:
Whats your favorite album by another artist?

Sydzilla:
"Never mind the Bollocks" - "Sex Pistols" & "Death, Rattle & Roll" - "Boneyard Zombies".

PUNK GLOBE:
Is your family musical?

Sydzilla:
My Mother used to sing, Brother plays guitar & sings great Johnny Cash & my 2 boys are showing signs of climbing aboard the Rock n Roll train.

PUNK GLOBE:
Any upcoming shows or tours?

Sydzilla:
I'm looking at doing some live dates in 2015 in the UK hopefully & meeting up with the Zombie boys about a new line up, album & tours. There was even talk about doing Rebellion this year & maybe coming to the USA doing shows with "One way System" as Tommy & Andy are OWS band members.

PUNK GLOBE:
Where can fans find music and Sydzilla info?

Sydzilla:
The XGYPSY music & video website is being updated but you should be able to get all my info, news, updates, music & videos at http://www.xgypsy.com/sydzilla.html

PUNK GLOBE:
Any shoutouts?

Sydzilla:
Just a huge shoutout to all the Psychos that have followed me, bought the album & supported me. Especially you, Lisa Punk Princess & Whatever68radio.com for being the first to air my songs even when they were in their rawest form ... I won't forget that! Keep it raw, keep it real, keep it loud & keep on Rockin' ... SydZ. \m/
