Scott Weiland RIP

Not Dead and Not For Sale

By Scott Weiland and David Ritz

Book Review By: Lisa Lunney

Lead singer of Stone Temple Pilots 1986-2003, 2008-present Scott Weiland won two Grammy's and fronted a grunge band that sold over 18 million records. This memoir explores the darker side of Weiland. Exploring the music, his tumultuous life and the demons he still continues to face. I read this memoir in less than a day because it was just that good. There is no doubt that Scott Weiland, lead singer for STP and Velvet Revolver has been through the wringer and most likely always will revisit his demons. His acceptance of responsibility and his simplistic, yet poignant, way of discussing his life really sat well with me. There was no whining and there is no blame, he simply shares his life for what it is.

I was highly impressed with this no nonsense yet beautifully written book/memoir/lyric sheet/poetry/scrapbook/art book and he had me captured from page one. He writes chronologically of his life but it is not as you would expect it to be. He takes snapshots of his life and exposes them for us to take a peek - but only a peek - and then he pulls back, jumping to something else equally as revealing but fleeting. The voyeur in me was completely satisfied. This book is only a glimpse into a complicated life and I believe this was done purposely - he is not vain enough to believe we care about it all, but he is a beautiful lyrist and storyteller (and if you know his music, I shouldn't have to tell you that), so you can't help but be captured. This did nothing but bolster my opinion of what I believe to be a very talented and incredible soul of a man.

I definitely recommend this to any fan of STP or Velvet Revolver.

I re-read this after learning of the passing of Scott, it is a great tragedy that the world will not have the privelege of hearing any more of Scott's words.
