' THE J '
Tells Mr. Plow Why
PSYCHOSTICK
Rule
By: Mr Plow
When I first heard of Psychostick it was like love at first listen. This was the type of band I've been looking to like for years. A band that has the chops to blast out metallic riffage. And also bring the funny. They are what Green Jelly was without the paper mache heads. They are not your everyday metal act with a face paint gimmick. They don't wear it. I caught up with them as they spread the funny cross America. Meet Psychostick.....
Punk Globe:
Who are you?
THE J:
Josh Key, aka "The J" of Psychostick. I play guitar, and record/produce the band.
Punk Globe:
Explain Psychostick to those who haven't heard of you "The J": Psychostick is like getting punched in the face with fun. It's heavy. It's ridiculous. It's for those who love metal but have a sense of humor and like to have a good time.
Punk Globe:
Your latest CD is entitled "Space Vampires Vs Zombie Dinosaurs in 3-D" Are you on team vampires or team dinosaurs?
THE J:
Team Zombie Dinosaurs for sure.
Punk Globe:
What is Humorcore?
THE J:
It's really a tongue-in-cheek label we gave ourselves when the explosion of "cores" happened... you know- hardcore, metalcore, grindcore, deathcore, groovecore...
Punk Globe:
How do metal bands feel about Psychostick?? Do they think you are making fun of metal? Or do they see the humor in it?
THE J:
Most metal bands totally get it and dig it. There are few that take offense, and we don't really care. We have a good time doing what we do, people who had a shitty day walk away from our show feeling better... Why should we apologize for that?
Punk Globe:
Is there a topic you just won't touch?
THE J:
We stay away from serious politics. We'll make fun of politics in general (like in "Political Bum"), but actually pushing a political side, viewpoint, or agenda would be a total buzzkill for what we do. We'd rather argue about stuff like which B-movie is the worst or which female Final Fantasy character is the hottest.
Punk Globe:
How is this national tour going?
THE J:
This tour has been a shitload of fun with Downtown Brown opening for us every night... They are cool fucking dudes, and I never miss their set. Our fans have been digging them like crazy, so much that we are going to take them out again next tour. They've gotten the best reaction from our fans out of any band we've ever taken out to open for us.
Punk Globe:
What are you listening to while on the road to help kill time??
THE J:
We listen to variety of music, but the best time killer on the road is to listen to podcasts... the "Stuff You Should Know" podcast that you can find on howstuffworks.com is excellent.
Punk Globe:
You do a parody of Drowning Pool's "Let the Bodies Hit The Floor" and called it"I Can Only Count To Four" Have they heard your parody? and what was their response?
THE J:
Ryan McCombs heard us play it one time when he happened to be hanging out at a bar in New Jersey (he was singing for Drowning Pool at the time). He thought it was hilarious, and I can prove it... we got him on tape saying "I Can Only Count To 4". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnV0hbpoOxM
