(Asbury Park, NJ) - After a successful event in 20l1, Paul Collins is set for more. Collins, known best for his work with The Beat, The Nerves and The Breakaways, built a lineup of thirteen bands from across the U.S. and Canada to play at the second annual Power Pop-A-Licious Fest at Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park, New Jersey. The power pop celebration takes place on November 16th and 17th.
Performers include New Jersey power-pop heroes The Modulators, The Disconnects and Lieder as featured acts span the continent from as far west as Portland Oregon (Blue Skies for Black Hearts) and as far north as Montreal (Kid Sentiment). Mixed in with the bands will be music from popular DJs Tony Lo-Fi (One Chord Progression) and Jenni Ladd (The Leopard Print Lounge).
"I am very proud of how this years line up came out, it was touch and go for awhile, we were planning to try and get some of the bigger names involved but it just proved too difficult, in the end I think things turned out for the best, on the whole these are all new, young bands, there are a few vets in there too, like The Magnolias and my old pals The Jennifers, but we have a great cross section of guitar driven melodic rock n roll, left, right and center of what is going on in power pop influenced music today. All these bands play songs and that is what is at the heart of power pop. I am not a purist in the sense that I think every band needs to fit a strict power pop mold, I think that power pop today is more elastic and I think that is good and the way it should be. When I first met Ginger, the founder of Punk Globe I was anything but punk, we wore 3 piece suits (The Nerves), but Ginger got what we did and we became friends immediately, I was so impressed that she dug our music and over the years she has always supported me and what I am doing...at the end of the day its just rock n roll music and that is what we are all driven by. "
In a recent interview on Revenge of the 80s Radio, Collins explained how power pop has gained a lot of fan momentum in recent years: "It's gaining acceptance and it's flourishing all over the world in ways it had never been before… It's really starting to gain momentum and take its rightful place as a serious genre in rock."
Collins credits the fans as well in keeping the genre strong: "Power pop fans are some of the best fans out there, they know that this music is a labor of love and they go way out of their way to help the bands who play this kind of music, when we are on the road, they feed us, take us into their homes and give us a warm place to sleep and they really make an effort to get to the shows and support the bands they love, it is more like family what I experience with our fans, they never cease to surprise me with their love and generosity."
