Punk Globe:
Well, since we at Punk Globe last caught up with you, you have done a lot of charity works. Can you tell us first about those two big events you had going?
Mark Emmins:
Firstly I had my body tattooed from head to toe raising money for cancer charities, I got pretty ill from it in the end. the suffering I went through was worth it though . Its one of those hair brain things I do and don't think of the consequences. the second one was something that tore at my heart to be honest, I did a single for a family to raise money for their child who had DMD ( Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy) "Nobody knows their time" the song and the words were so powerful that it was soon picked up and put on a massive scale to hit people globally. It reached no.12 in the Itunes Rock chart and I was involved in a few TV interviews about it. normally if I do a charity thing, I can do my bit and walk away but this one is something that I became deeply involved with as a child in my street has the condition and as he grows I will see him eventually go through all the motions of it which will eventually lead to an early death there are around 2700 kids in UK alone with this condition and I have had the pleasure of meeting some of them. The song touched the hearts of families going through this, I had no idea it would have meant so much to them and given them hope . I am proud of the song and whats it has achieved.
Punk Globe:
The Punk single FUCK OFF NOW was supposed to be a bit off fun. But now appears on the VORTEX album, tell us how it came to being.
Mark Emmins:
Ha !! Well I originally did the song as someone pointed out that I never swear in my songs and they praised me for that, so I recorded that track to get it out of my system. People that had heard the song all really liked it for its novelty factor, In this business you meet so many false people and some nasty characters that befriend you and do their best to destroy everything you work for Fuck off now is dedicated to them. Strangely enough I think this could also be the song to get me a lot of recognition out here , its vile words and punky tune all make a great song lets face it we all swear, we all get mad with people at times .. so this song basically says it all and there is always someone in your life that this song will relate to ! I think I will be putting this song out as a single and submitting it to radio stations .. If it gets banned its a HIT !!
Punk Globe:
You recently gained new management and promotion, and have had your fair share of bad management. Is there anything you could say on it, and anything you could impart on other Indiependant musicians like myself in the way of advice?
Mark Emmins:
The best advice I could offer is to self manage what you do until the point comes where you have to seek management. don't go looking on places like Facebook for management the correct people you need are not there. If you are seeking management then seriously avoid any company that asks you for money up front because your cash is all they want and you will not be represented correctly. There are companies out there now offering a package to get radio plays etc if you pay them to manage you but think about just how many people are throwing money at these people they will never be able to give you one on one representation or attention to detail. Look for someone with a proven track record to what they offer or if you have a close friend that is good with business skills and you trust them give them a try. but remember if you work with a friend then you are business partners you have to split the two things and you will argue from time to time.
Punk Globe:
Vortex, the new album, is a heavy piece of work. When did you start the process for this record, and did you make a conscious effort to go so heavy with it?
Mark Emmins:
I started work on the album around March this year. I get into a writing mode and just go with it, as you know I work alone so I don't get distracted. I start a song in the morning and by the afternoon I have something cooking musically but I never know what way the song will go, Yeah Vortex is a heavier album and a bit of attitude thrown in the mix on some songs " I Wanna Get Drunk" and "Your Shit Does Stink" and not forgetting "Fuck Off Now" is basically me saying that I'm not all about love songs. There is more to me and when people chip at your career especially when they are doing fuck all with theirs some of those songs were a message to say up yours mate ! There are softer songs on the album too in all its a good variation of my styles. I like to dabble from time to time and anything that comes out has my unique stamp on it . This album sort of reflects my many emotions as a musician and how I differ from other people , as a musician it can be a tough life financially and mentally, you feel alienated from others too at times and it can be hard to communicate with others that don't understand that what I do is not a hobby its a full time career. I believe in myself and know that one day a door will open and my material will get heard nationally so i work with that intention. I never take what I do for shits and giggles, I look at what I do from the stage of an arena rather than a shed with your mates watching.
Punk Globe:
You have a tour coming up (which I will be seeing you on) and have been touring too. How has it been going and any good tour stories you'd like to share?
Mark Emmins:
I love the touring part, you get to meet people that you have talked to on the Internet and also play to people that have never heard you before I enjoy that. I have played some god awful places to some great people and some great places with awful people. Its hard work being a solo act as you have no one to rely on apart from yourself and it can also be lonely out there at times. I do 2 sets when I'm out there one of original stuff and also a set with some cover songs to get people into what I'm doing and recognize some of the stuff I do, I miss a band I can't wait to get a full band together but the venues are not paying anything like they used to to be able to support an up and coming band but next year I will be looking to tour with a full band with me. The touring so far has had mixed views, some have loved it, some have called it Karaoke ! I can see that point but I have never seen a Karaoke artist shake their butt and sweat buckets to entertain an audience the way that I do so bollocks to that theory I'm a solo artist with backing tracks if you don't like it then go to another pub and leave me to get on with my job ! .
Punk Globe:
Whats next for Emmins? And exactly how can people find out more about you and your discography?
Mark Emmins:
Well I'm already working on new material here and also thinking about a best of album for December time. Last year I released 7 albums in all and so far this year Im on my 3rd. I have recently taken all my music down from Itunes as the distributor has been having a nice dig in my funds and I put a stop to that. I have recently made a deal with Itunes to distribute direct to them so the albums will return to the listings soon but until then my new album can be found on my website www.emmins.net. I'm hoping that from September onwards I will be out there doing more shows all over UK and getting drunk with you lot. I'm now looking for a music publisher to help get my songs on films and maybe sell a few to larger artists I had to laugh the other day my son was watching Tracy Beaker and one of my songs was played in the background on that so its sparked this new direction to get my stuff out in other ways. I am also thinking about a TV documentary about my life which will let you into what I do and who I am I plan to call it "Anarchy Chaos and Home To Bed" so I'm looking for a film crew to do that soon. Whatever happens over the next few months you can guarantee that I will remain active to the full and I wont back down on any challenge thrown at me .
