Lee "Scratch" Perry

"I’m an artist, a musician, a magician, a writer, a singer; I’m everything. My name is Lee from the African jungle, originally from West Africa. I’m a man from somewhere else, but my origin is from Africa, straight to Jamaica through reincarnation; reborn in Jamaica...

That's how the mad scientist of reggae, ska and dub presents himself, with his own words.

First off may I say, being a fan of reggae and ska music, reviewing this DVD certainly was a pleasure.

Along with King Tubby, Lee invented dub back in the 60's and 70's. Besides being known as a musician, he is also known as a producer and brought magic to, amongst others, Bob Marley and the Wailers' early work. Perry also appeared as the producer of The Clash's single ''Complete Control'', and co-wrote "Police and Thieves" with Junior Murvin who recorded it originally. Later covered by The Clash on their debut album.

The band (Besides old man ''Scratch'' himself) consists of very professional reggae musicians, they start the set off with a nice, offbeat ska song entitled ''Upsetter Word Wind'' in the beginning.

Lee later arrives with what looks like a custom suit, lots of jewelry and a large hat covering his red hair, matching his beard.

Throughout the show Lee presents his thoughts for the audience, perhaps even more so than really singing, a weird experience may I say, but truly magnificent.

At age 72 Lee still has got what it takes to make a performance, from the from the first song to the extraordinary encore in the end, he really proves that he know how to put on a show, a far better one than you get with most performers, especially the ones at his age.

Most certainly recommended, whether you're a fan of reggae, ska and dub, or just simply great music in general!
