Lee "Scratch" Perry

Must Be Free

MVD/CD Review By: Jaime Pina

An interesting release where two worlds collide and give birth to some amazing music. Dub reggae legend Lee "Scratch" Perry meets up with John Palmer of Spacewave with Perry providing vocals over the music tracks put together by Palmer. Being a legendary figure, Perry has managed to work with a variety of different artists over the years from Bob Marley to Bill Laswell to Animal Collective. This disc has the "Upsetter" slinging vocals over soundscapes that range from tripped-out space-hop to industrial reggae and dub.

The tracks are dense like wading through syrup. The beats are heavy on the trippy songs and carry the beat on the reggae tracks. At around 80 years old Perry's vocals are frail and powerful at the same time. If you are a Perry fan you will find this to be an interesting and satisfying project and if you are a fan of trip hop with a reggae influence this will also scratch that itch.
