Playing the UK's most outrageous concert in perilous conditions on top of Ben Nevis, Britain's highest peak
|
Most bands' ambitions stretch to playing iconic venues like the Town and Country Club or even vast arenas like the 02. The band Kings Cross are very different.....
|
The six-piece Essex band are putting the final preparations together to play the highest gig in the UK when they'll climb Ben Nevis
and play a set of their songs, with a full electric PA. They're also planning to perform the UK's highest drum and guitar solos while
there. Reaching the summit of Ben Nevis is a feat in itself, but they will also be carrying 30Kg power generators and PA speakers on
their backs. Conditions in October will be dangerous, with wind chill, the temperature could get as low as -20C and the mountain may
well be covered in snow. Kings Cross will be raising money for charity as part of the trip, with Parkinson's UK and The J's Hospice set
to benefit from funds raised.
|
The band are no strangers to controversy, and outlandish promotion, having been previously banned from a major chain of venues for having custard pie fights on stage, and performing fire tricks to sold out crowds. Previous photoshoots have seen the band dissecting body's in laboratory conditions, and being dumped in the north sea in December.
|
For Kings Cross front man Dan Raynham III, this is another unusual day at the office. From presenting radio shows to modeling for Channel 4's 'How To Look Good Naked' he is a consummate showman, always looking for his next adventure.
|
This is just the beginning of the adventure for the band. The Ben Nevis Challenge is the first stop on the Kings Cross Extreme World Tour which, if it
comes off, will see them play the hottest and coldest inhabited areas in the world, the largest monolith in the world and the most remote island in the
world, alongside other unlikely places for gigs like the South Pole. The band are currently pitching the idea as a TV show and have increasing interest,
describing it as "Top Gear meets Michael Palin's Pole to Pole meets Spinal Tap." it'll make a tour T-shirt like no other. Kings Cross play Ben Nevis over
the weekend of October 16-17.
