Kevin Martin
Throwback Pop
By: Gus Bernadicou
“Throwback Pop” is an album packed with perfectly crafted three-minute power-pop gems. It’s refreshing to hear such a tightly wound pop album. The album starts off with the anthem of the year, “TV News” and then transcends into the delightful “I Know Why.” "TV News" is the prototype for power-pop, spinning a web crafted by words and a catchy melody. “I Know Why” is like early Jellyfish… “I Need Your Love” is Butch Walker-esque, radio friendly power-pop… On second thought, maybe it’s Butch Walker that tries to sound like Kevin Martin? That’s it. “Fall Again” is a personal song and insures the listener about playing Kevin Martin. “Lie To Me” features superb production work… The ballad of the album, “Looking For Love” closes the album and makes the listener want more.
With a name like Kevin Martin you would expect country, or some touchy feely singer-songwriter but what you get is the opposite. Sure there is emotion here, and it’s the perfect amount. The album balances between swimming in the abyss and getting out of it… BUY THIS ALBUM!
