Tells All To C.B. Doyle
Interview By: C.B. Doyle
Punk Globe:
Wow Jody, Sideshow has writers from all over the globe. Does it feel good to write under a theme like Sideshow or did you just happen to have a story that fit?
Jody Ruth:
I was friends with Rob Miller on Facebook and saw that he was looking for writers for a new anthology. I don't usually get a chance to submit short stories, but the idea of a horrifying circus and it's acts enthralled me. When an anthology calls and I read the subject matter, I'll know there and then if I can come up with a story, and 'Burning Hearts' came to me instantly.
Punk Globe:
Your film Demons explores your personal darkness and how you fought your way back to a kind of light. Do you see your story as an exploration of humanities darkness ?
Jody Ruth:
I see all of my stories as an exploration of humanities darkness... psychologists make of that what you will! I'm... happier (?) writing about the darker things in life. Quite possibly because my own life is usually very light-coloured and fun! Although the subject matter of 'Demons' is very heavy, it covered a short period of my life. A period I had to experience to make the good things in life even better.
Punk Globe:
Punk Rock was born out of the frustration of the poor and workers oppression in England that was channeled into creative music. Do you think that writing in the horror and fantasy is maybe the same kind of thing for you? A way to rise above or even explore your anger at the world?
Jody Ruth:
I'd like to give you a deep, meaningful answer, and say 'yeah, the pressures of life and government upon me made me the dark-hearted bastard I am today', but it wouldn't be true. I'm a happy, carefree guy, and I have good friends and family around me to keep me focused. Writing horror is just something that I'm good at. But I can also write romance, sci-fi, crime, and even porn (all of which I've had published). I'm not angry at The Man because I care about him as much as he cares about me.
Punk Globe:
Do you think that because of the darkness and fears that so many have for the future of humanity it is easier to write horror stories?
Jody Ruth:
Again, I write them because it's what I'm good at, but I'll admit freely that there's probably something dark and twisted inside me that makes it easy!
Punk Globe:
How did you find Visionary Press?
Jody Ruth:
I think they found me! Ha! To be honest, I'm involved with so many publishers and have a plethora of fantastic writer friends, that when a new publishing house pops up I find myself gravitating toward it because that's where my other writing buddies are drawn to. Social media has revolutionalised and restructured the world of writing. For the better.
Punk Globe:
What is in store for you in the future? Will you focus on writing or can we look forward to more films from you, or both?
Jody Ruth:
I was born a writer, and I'll die a writer. I'll happily do more films, and there are one or two currently in pre-production as we speak. I'm actually looking toward writing for radio... something that really appeals to me.
Punk Globe:
You've done film and writing any music on the horizon?
Jody Ruth:
I hosted my own radio show for two or three years until I got sacked. Twice. I've also just 'starred' in a music video for a band called Hollowdrone, which was loads of fun, and I'd love to do again.
Jody Ruth:
I love music, and I've been to some of the best festivals in the world; Vegas, Tomorrowland, and where I live on the Isle of Wight we have two festivals a year to keep me going. I've traveled the world to see DJs and bands that I like. In fact, I'm to Amsterdam in November to see a good friend of mine play.
Punk Globe:
Do you have any Internet addresses to share?
Jody Ruth:
You can check out my website at www.jodyneilruth.com Be warned - some of it is pretty heavy when you deal with the 'Demons' side of things, but I also (in)famously wrote about gigs and festivals I attended. It's full of idiocy, drugs, and the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. You'll love it!
Punk Globe:
Any final words for our readers?
Jody Ruth:
In the immortal words of Joe Dirt... "Keep on keepin' on..."
