Formed in
the Bay Area by guitarists Billy Rowe and Fernie Rod in 1983,
Jetboy played regularly at San Francisco' Mabuhay Gardens, where
they gained a reputation for cultivating their glam/sleaze rock
roots, mixed in with a little punk rock for fertilizer, with the
spiky haired sonic dynamo Mickey Finn on main vocals.
Their
constant trips to the Southland where they traded gigs with the
likes of Guns 'n' Roses, only added to their glamour: They were
hailed as innovators in the genre, a reputation that was greatly
aided, even guided, some say, by the addition of bassist Sam Jaffa
(Sami Takamaki) from the breakup of the influential Finnish band
Hanoi Rocks, after a drunken Vince Neil of Mötley Crüe crashed his
car, killing his passenger Hanoi Rocks drummer Razzle (Nicholas
DIngby).
Tensions
within the band led Jaffa to rejoin his old Hanoi Rocks cohort
Michael Monroe (Matti Fagenholm) on some other musical projects.
Jetboy
floundered, even though they put out an album "Damned Nation
(1990)." Rick Davis replaced Ron Tostenson on percussion, and
their were eventually being let go by their label MCA.
A name (and musical change) to MINDZONE did no good as by now
their glam had been spammed, and grunge was lunging forward.
Jetboy guitarist Billy Rowe teamed up with Lance Boone and
American Heartbreak was born. But that's another story.
Their
story their rise, fall, crash, burn and phoenix-like resurrection
--the band is currently trolling the clubs in California--is
contained in this mitred and mottled, rattled and rolled out
release.
For a mega
dose of their showmanship, this DVD showcases a1986 performance at
the Sunset Strip's Whisky A Go-Go; a slide show of the band's
history, and interviews with band members as of 2007.
It also
includes a CD with 21 record tracks: mostly old leftover demos but
also with two new songs -- "Feel The Shake," and 'Folsom Prison
Blues,' a riveting version of the old classic.
