Irish Street Punk band Hooligan formed in Dublin back in October 2009. Fast forward ten years and they have released their sixth and latest 7" EP Dublin City Rockers via Advance Records on vinyl. The more observant amongst you may recognise frontman David Linehan as guitarist in The Blue Carpet Band.
Do these yobs from Dublin take us on a 'magic carpet' ride? Well let's put the needle on the record and find out. The EP opener is the track Punk Rock n' Roll and I'm thinking this EP has No Future! Literally, as it reminded me of the Sex Pistols' track of that name! God Save the Queen! We stay with the female of the species for track two, a cover of Skid Row's Dublin City Girls. Before I reviewed this EP, if you'd mentioned the words Skid Row and band to me, I would automatically think of the American Skid Row. However, a little bit of research tells me that, a couple of decades before Rachel Bolan and Snake Sabo formed their version of Skid Row, a lesser known band of the same name existed in Dublin. Whilst the (Irish) Skid Row never achieved the same global fame, it is the band in which both Phil Lynott and Gary Moore (of Thin Lizzy) arguably equally, if not more, famous than their American counterparts, first played in professionally. This track reminded me of another American band from years ago, this time Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers and their song Born to Lose!
Now, with the needle lifting off side one, we flip the record over and A Gang Like Us comes at you full throttle and punches those ears straight into Saturday's Heroes a track reminiscent of the Anti-Nowhere League's (We Will Not) Remember You!
With tracks reminding me of Born to Lose, No Future and (We Will Not) Remember You, you could be forgiven for thinking this was instantly forgettable! However that really isn't the case. The Dublin City Rockers have pulled an impressive EP out of the bag!
