Welcome to my debut piece for this super cool magazine Punk Globe.
Dirty Liars from Brisbane Australia
First got wind of this most amazing act around 3 years ago and I have been following them ever since. A mix of "don't fuck with us and we are here to save the world" sound going on with this lot. High octane punk rock at its best . Very catchy riffs with a freight train bass line at all times.
Originally formed in 2011 by guitarist, Ian McManus, after a stage appearance with the king of punk, Iggy Pop, at a Big Day Out Festival. McManus managed to get himself on stage with the king and the rest is history. Couple of mis-fires and things started to come together over the first 12 months.
Fronted by the extremely cool Mandy Moo,(Lawyer, Guitarist, tequila enthusiast and rock goddess). I can see this woman representing some of us washed up punks at some stage in court in the future, (Good contact to have). Playing an awesome sounding guitar character is Glasgow born Ian McManus. He has a very animated angry presence and all round funny guy. (Show me a Scott who doesn't) I've only had minimal contact with Ian via email, however I'm sure he's a scream. Currently filling in at fullback (drums), is Mr nice guy Bevan Bancroft, from iconic Brisbane band The Pretty Fingers. Thumping away like a freight train on Bass is non-other than Brendan Dawe, he is an insanely talented guy and rounds off the formula nicely.
This four piece powder keg is turning heads and ears whenever they take on a venue.. Very powerful sounds coming off stage, with high energy mayhem to be had by all who have the pleasure of being in the crowd. Not one of your bands that seem to take any gig thrown at them and that's a massive plus when you are hell-bent on giving the punters what they want. Gone are the 30 max crowds they started playing to... Things have come a long way since those days.
Dirty Liars are self-managed, with pretty much an all-round "We've got this" kind of attitude"(Promo/Marketing and all the general madness associated with booking gigs). This has gotten then into some tightly closed doors lately. They have managed to pull the slot as opening Act for Australian legends, "Painters and Dockers", in Brisbane next month, as well as a trip to Melbourne for a string of supports. "We are planning a trip to the USA next year". Moo went on to say. "We have some interesting connections and should it all align, and then Boom, States bound it is...".
Moo list's their influences as, The Stooges/The Clash/New York Dolls and The Stranglers as well as bunch more. It becomes very evident when you listen to them that these bands are subliminally ingrained into their sound.
I asked Moo and McManus about their take on the Current state of musical affairs in Brisbane... Their reply was outstanding, summed it up pretty much spot on.
Moo explains,"Brisbane scene is great, I would have loved to have been around the Joh Bjelke Petersen era ( Most Corrupt Politician in our state's history). It has the same 'up yours' energy that was around then, the same energy and unrest that was prevalent in Glasgow in the Thatcher era , (where Ian's from) and he draws a lot of anger from there into his guitar. Glasgow was certainly away from the music industry and cultural centre that in some respects financed and propagated mainstream punk rock. Glasgow just carried on regardless with no regard and pretty much no respect for popular alternatives that gave bands like The Jolt, Johnny and the Self abusers, Jesus and the Mary Chain a unique standpoint, we see that happening in Brisbane right now and we love it.
McManus said, "Corruption, angst, unrest, political buffoonery are distant from the mainstream, it's a time tested recipe for punk rock, that corruption and unrest is still very prevalent and rife today, the only difference is that the corruption is more hidden and protected, yeah Brisbane scene kicks ass".
Dirty Liars are about to return into the studio with producer Bryce Moorhead, of Violent Soho fame in the near future. This man will bring out the best in what they have on offer, without a doubt. Moorhead has a knack of squeezing every last piece of creativity out of a band. Taking their art to another level is his specialty and it will interesting to hear the outcome at full time.
I look forward to the next paragraph from this shit-hot-fuck-off sounding band.
