Interview With Colette Trudeau
by Steve DIY

I first came across Colette when she was 14 and playing for the all girl band ´Live On Release´ which I later had the pleasure of interviewing for Girl Punk Net www.girlpunk.net/interviews/liveonrelease. After the breaking up of Live On Release I was hoping they´d all go and do something else and 3 of them did including Colette who has a wicked voice and it would have been a crime not to pursue her dreams. Anyway here´s what the great lady had to say for herself.

Punk Globe: First off Colette introduce yourself to our readers.

I´m Colette Trudeau, former lead singer of the all female rock group, LiveonRelease. We had a hit single "I´m Afraid Of Britney Spears" and had 4 music videos on high rotation on Much Music. The band broke up in 2003 in which case I decided to try a solo project, which seems to be working out extremely well right now.

Punk Globe: I think its been about 3 years since you left Live On Release so in that time have you been busy re-inventing yourself and writing your debut album?

Very busy. It´s been an adventure in itself getting myself back out there. I´ve lucked out a lot! I´ve had the chance to meet and work with AMAZING and talented people. Right now I´m busy finishing off the rest of the album, which will be done at the end of August. I have an amazing team working with me.

Punk Globe: You´re only 20 and despite your young age you´ve done 2 albums, a few videos and gigged plenty from the age of 13 so what inspires you to carry on?

Without being totally cheesy...I love music. Even with all the garbage that has happened to me in my music career, I´ve still decided to press on. I can´t see myself doing anything else.

Punk Globe: I personally think and have always thought you have an amazing voice but with all the hype with Avril Lavigne being Canadian do you ever get worried you might get over looked?

Its something you have to keep in the back of your mind. Its hard being a female solo artist right now....let alone a female rock solo artist from Canada. You´re obviously an Avril wannabe, which couldn´t be further from the truth. Its like saying The Used are trying to be like Incubus. Yeah...they´re both in the rock genre...but would anyone ACTUALLY put them side by side? Their rock styles are totally different. Even though Avril has gained EXTREME success which I hope to achieve someday, I feel as though my sound is different from hers. When I was in LiveonRelease we were also compared to Avril and said to be Avril wannabes. Our album came out approximately 1 year before hers. Its poor grouping.

Punk Globe: You have just released an EP on Shred Records so how is that doing in terms of good publicity and sales?

No EP has been released yet. We´ve been posting songs online to get feedback and so far we´ve had amazing feedback. I´m hoping once we do release, the songs people have heard will help sales. We´ve been spreading the word a lot through myspace and have had a lot of people asking where they can buy the album. Its a great way to get some free publicity. Once the album is finished, we´ll be going full throttle on publicity.

Punk Globe: So tell our readers about your solo album - Who is going to release it and when will it be released?

The album is going to be released under Shred Records/Koch October 05´ in Canada and late January, early February 06´ in Japan under Wood Records. We will be releasing in the States hopefully early 06´.

Punk Globe: Your songs are different to what you did with Live On Release so what inspires you to write the way you do?

Well I´ve been given the opportunity to work with some amazing writers who have helped develop my songwriting skills. I tend to write the way I feel. If I feel like writing an emo-type songs....I will. If I feel like writing a huge rock song...I will. I like the fact that I can now mold myself to what type of music I feel like writing.

Punk Globe: I see you´re inspired by the likes of Garbage and you can hear bits and pieces of that influence in your sound so I presume you´ll be heading in the direction of indie music?

I´d like to keep indie elements in my music but like Garbage, they are a major act. I too want to be a major act. I doubt I´ll stray too far from my roots which is indie music.

Punk Globe: You´ve obviously had some great times over the years so would you like to recall your favorite memory for our readers?

There were tons of awesome times but the one that sticks out right now is the time I had was at Snow Jam. The Black Halos were playing and they decided to grab my drummer (Leah) and myself from side stage and brought us on to sing background vocals for a song. I did NOT know the song at all...so I picked it up as the song went on. I have a photo of Lean and I just looking at each other laughing. That was an AWESOME day.

Punk Globe: Is the band you have backing at present going to be a perm fixture or do you like to experiment with your sound with different musicians?

I doubt I´ll stray from the musicians I have right now. The guys I have are amazing musicians and are killer live. I like to approach my band members as if they´re an equal part. We´ve got some chemistry going and everything fits.

Punk Globe: So can we ever see you bring your music to Europe in the next year or so?

There is a lot of stuff in the works right now so I believe that you will be seeing me in Europe very soon.

Punk Globe: Anything you´d like to add?

Just for everyone to keep their eyes and ears open for the single "Freeze". If you´d like to hear a few of my songs which are posted you can check them out at www.myspace.com/colettetrudeau or www.shredrecords.com

Thanks to Colette for taking time out to do the interview. Hopefully I should have a copy of her up and coming EP for review very soon - I´ll also be updating you on the release of Colettes debut album too! Watch this space! Finally you just have to hear what a great voice she has so please do visit her site - Her voice is amazing.
