Mike Spent Goes One On One With

Chip Kinman:

Ford Madox Ford And Formerly Of The Dils, Rank and File!

Interview By: Mike Spent

PUNK GLOBE:
Chip please tell us why the genre New wave/punk rock and how the band and its name the Dils was born?

Chip:
In the mid seventies the only thing to play was punk rock. If you played anything else you were an asshole. The Dils played punk rock because we were punk rock. We invented it along with the other west coast bands. We called ourselves The Dils because it meant nothing.
"In the mid seventies the only thing to play was punk rock."

PUNK GLOBE:
Please tell us what growing up in SoCal and Carlsbad was like as a teenager in the 1970s

Chip:
Fucked. I was into The Dolls. Everyone else was into Uriah Heep. It was fucked up!

PUNK GLOBE:
How did you land a spot in Cheech and Chongs "Up in Smoke" and who else can we look for as background?

Chip:
We heard about the filming from Peter Urban who heard about it from Rodney Bingenheimer . We just drove up from Carlsbad and said "We're next!" You can see the first hundred faces of L.A. punk rock in the crowd. Good fun!

PUNK GLOBE:
Moving to San Franscico tell us about the scene and how it was being punk rockers in the endless summer of love city?

Chip:
Very exciting in a very beautiful exciting city. It was an easy city to be broke in. I loved every second of it. Great bands and great Chinese food.

PUNK GLOBE:
Can you tell us a bit about Rank and File and the cow punk movement ?

Chip:
There was really no cow punk scene. There was only Rank and File. We played Country music, Everyone hated it except me and Tony.

PUNK GLOBE:
Looking back and regrets or memorable situations?

Chip:
Absolutely no regrets. I am a grown ass man and my life is great!

PUNK GLOBE:
What's life like today,do you have a family ?

Chip:
I have a wife and two grown kids. my daughter Toluca is a second grade teacher and my son, Dewey is the guitar player in Ford Madox Ford.

PUNK GLOBE:
So the new band can you please tell us about Ford Maddox ? Is Tony involved?

Chip:
We play the blues. Yeah the blues the same way I play everything else. Tony is writing and producing our first record. Expect it.

PUNK GLOBE:
What type of music just doesn't appeal to you or that you simply can not stand?

Chip:
Can't think of anything off the bat. I really don't like folk music.

PUNK GLOBE:
And currently what do you listen too ? And how do you feel about today's crop of punk rockers ?

Chip:
I like Kanye West! I think he is some kind of genius skinhead! I like new punk rock. The Katellas and Fidlar are fantastic.

PUNK GLOBE:
What would you say to a kid starting out today?

Chip:
Turn it up, Never turn it down ever. Never run. Never!

PUNK GLOBE:
Any last comments or band links etc ?

Chip:
Everyone should dig Ford Madox Ford, right?

PUNK GLOBE:
Thanks Chip for your time and Gary for the inspiration.
