Its a great time for Original Punk lately, with new albums and old bands returning. I have just listened to the awesome new album by Stoke On Trent legends BROKEN BONES, entitled "FUCK YOU AND ALL YOU STAND FOR", and the album proved they are showing no signs of slowing down!
Formed in 1983 after Guitarist Terry (BONES) left his first band, DISCHARGE (one of the UK'S big three hardcore punk acts along with GBH and The Exploited) with Bassist HODDY and Vocalist QUIV still in the line up from the earlier days, joined by DAVE on Drums. The band are often cited as a big influence on Thrash Metal bands like Metallica and Slayer and were pivotal in kicking off the Crossover Metal genre, exposing Thrash to Punk. According to the albums press release, Bones reckons this new album is better than TRADER IN DEATH, the 1987 album he thought was the best, so, re listening to that album and then this new one, I can confirm he's right.
The 9th Studio album "FUCK YOU AND ALL YOU STAND FOR" kicks off with the opener DEATH BY DEMAND, and from the opening salvo, you know this will be an extreme ride, the song grabs you and literally smacks you in the face, with Quiv spitting out vocals about a hostage waiting to die - strong stuff indeed. ENEMY WITHIN is decry at the useless governments who took us to war with the Terrorist, and has a solo from Bones that takes the song to another level, and again, the tempo here never lets up. I.E.D is the third tack, which I don't think would have been out of place on a Motorhead album, a Lyric which deals with the extremities of war, PERSECUTION is another war dealing song, this time more of the way the Nazi scum killed and tortured people, hearing this on the CD, I thought to myself this would be a song which in a live situation would take your head off!!
The album is so angry and full of power, and the stand out track for me is MINIMUM WAGE, very fast and powerful and showing a band with a very tight and rehearsed Rhythm Section in Hoddy and Dave, I cant wait to see this live when I share a bill with them in November, and is so cleverly written that everyone who works for the minimum wage can identify with its lyric - "DON'T WANNA BE NO SLAVE / WORK TIL YOU DROP IN A CORPORATE GRAVE".
TORTURE is another great track, dealing with the subject of Animal torture, I love the fact that what these lyrics are saying are relevant and true to the world we live in today, proving that there are things worth shouting about, and by the time of album closer BRAINWASHED, you really feel you have been dragged through what is wrong in this fucked up world of ours, with music as unrelenting as the subject matter.
"FUCK YOU AND ALL YOU STAND FOR" is an album for Punks, Metal Heads and Hardcore Freaks alike, and will not disappoint ANYONE who picks it up, If your looking for angry, loud, fast, uncompromising music and even angrier subject matter, Grab this album now!!!
