BONNIE FORNEY
The Author Of walking small
Interview By: Ginger Coyote
Imagine growing up and then discovering that you suffer from D.I. D. Dissociative Identity Disorder. That is exactly what happened to Bonnie Forney. Bonnie had a rough childhood born to a family of nine in a lower middle class family in Manchester, Iowa. A series of events happened in her life, in which Bonnie, just could not explain some of her actions. She was confused and lost, until she finally found the right physician. She discovered that she suffered from D.I.D.... Bonnie wrote a book called "walking small" and I was lucky enough to get to ask her a few questions about her life.. I hope that this interview will help others understand a bit more about having multiple personalities existing in just one body.
Punk Globe:
Thank you for doing this interview Bonnie. Can you give the readers some background on yourself?
BONNIE FORNEY:
I am just an average girl from the Midwest with six personalities. I was born in Manchester, Iowa and am seventh child of nine. My family was lower middle class. Up until I met my husband, I was always somewhat mousey and shy.
Punk Globe:
You have written a very forthright and compelling book called "walking small" and in it you write about your battle with having Dissociative Identity Disorder.. Can you explain D.I.D. for the readers whom may not be familiar with the disorder?
BONNIE FORNEY:
The older less politically correct name was multiple personality disorder. As the person I was to become was developing, like during puberty, different parts of me became frozen. Certain parts of me weren't allowed to come out and were suppressed due to things I talk about in my book. They might have remained frozen in time, but a trauma brought those sides of me to the surface. Then they sort of took over to protect "us". Each of those personalities become "real" people. The others of us experience the rest of the personalities almost like dreams. When I am "Bunny" or any of the others, it's like someone else is doing things with my mind and body and "I" am just watching things happen and have no control.
Punk Globe:
In the book you name five personalities? One being Bonnie Forney.. Have you met anymore since the book has been released?
BONNIE FORNEY:
The Beast is the newest. She still comes out and takes over at times. I seem to have six personalities fighting for control for the most part. The interesting factor is I have four brothers. Maybe one of my personalities relates to each of them. And add in the "real" me, if she exists, and a gate keeper.
Punk Globe:
Did you watch "One Life To Live" when they presented the D.I.D. storyline?
BONNIE FORNEY:
No, I didn't. Until I found out I had it, I didn't know anything about the condition.
Punk Globe:
On "One Life To Live" Vikki Lord Buchanan's Gate Keeper was Jean Randolph a kind of a no nonsense by the book type personality. Has your Doctor discovered your Gate Keeper?
BONNIE FORNEY:
He calls her The Drill Sargeant. I call her The Beast.
Punk Globe:
You mention in your book "walking small" that your D.I.D. was because of incest sexual abuse. That is what triggered Vikki's D.I.D. as well... Do you have any real idea how long these other personalities have taken over your body and mind?
BONNIE FORNEY:
My doctor says, the Others or The Many may have begun then, but they were let loose when Bonnie was raped at the Isle of Capri Casino. She, Us, Bonnie went into post traumatic shock. All the personalities started coming forward to "protect" us.
Punk Globe:
In the book you mention Bunny a flirty teen who seems to be like a younger version of Nikki Smith . Tell the readers how you became aware of her?
BONNIE FORNEY:
I am not familiar with Nikki Smith. I was Bunny for three years, from 2008 until late 2010 when Bonnie started to fight for control. During those years, I as Bonnie, would start to drive to work, black out, and not become Bonnie again until maybe eight hours later. I thought I was going nuts. I was! Finally I started experiencing Bunny as a dream, slowly starting to figure it out. Actually I didn't really know for a long time, until after I was diagnosed.
Punk Globe:
Bunny seems to be the most dominant personality according to your book?
BONNIE FORNEY:
Of the Many, she is. Her and I, Bonnie, had to fight for control for a long time. I would say Bunny was in control from 2008, right after I was raped, when we needed her, until 2011. Bunny was meant to protect us, but destroyed my life with her sexual antics.
Punk Globe:
Beast sounds very destructive does she appear often?
BONNIE FORNEY:
She is like the Hulk, which is sort of her other name. She is very destructive. Not good for the rest of us. Our body suffers from high blood pressure. It's not good when the Beast throws a tantrum. She still comes out if we are under too much stress. As far as often, any time is too many. She pops up about every few weeks or months depending of things.
Punk Globe:
You don't have any male personalities unlike Sybil and Vikki Lord Buchanan portrayed by Erika Slezak and of course "The United States Of Tara portrayed by the fabulous Toni Collette. I guess this question may tie in with the one above about finding out about other personalities.
BONNIE FORNEY:
I have just the six personalities.
Punk Globe:
Bonnie Rocker seems to be pretty integrated with Bonnie Forney wouldn't you say?
BONNIE FORNEY:
Bonnie Rocker saved us! She took the best parts of Bunny and got rid of all the worst of Bunny. Bonnie and Bonnie Rocker can integrate. Bunny was destroying everything. Bunny and Bonnie Rocker are the same personality. They both need attention. As the Rocker, Bunny can still get attention without destroying us. I think Bonnie Rocker is the first step in my personalities blending.
Punk Globe:
By writing your book, do feel that you are making Bonnie Forney, the dominant personality?
BONNIE FORNEY:
That was my reason for writing the book. I was literally going insane. I was lost. Since the book, I am finding out who the "I" is, and the "We" is slowing vanishing. But, I will always be "The Many". The thing is maybe now I can live as the many.
Punk Globe:
I applaud you as a victim of incest for speaking out about it and how it affected you.. Are you getting alot of encouragement from others?
BONNIE FORNEY:
I just came out in the book. I sent a copy to my older sister. We have been estranged for decades. She hasn't replied. I doubt she will. So far, Gary has been my sole encouragement. This is all an ongoing process.
Punk Globe:
Did you read Mackenzie Phillips book about her affair with her father?
BONNIE FORNEY:
I read a little here and there. I am not a big reader. Gary is. I'm not. I can identify with Mackenzie though. Haven't read her book.
Punk Globe:
Are you happy that shows like "One Life To Live" and "United States Of Tara" are presenting Dissociative Identity Disorder to a larger audience?
BONNIE FORNEY:
I haven't seen them, but Yes. Before I knew what was going on with me, I was frightened and alone. I was going insane. I didn't know how I could go on. Now that I know, I can start to live.
Punk Globe:
Sally Field was incredible in "Sybil".. I was completely unaware of the disorder until I started watching "One Life To Live". Did it take you meeting with alot of different doctors to diagnose you with having D.I.D.?
BONNIE FORNEY:
It felt like it. I went through a bunch of doctors. Finally, one of them listened to Gary when he told them I was acting like several people. That doctor refereed me to another, and finally I was diagnosed with what I had. It's very misunderstood.
Punk Globe:
How have the reviews been for "walking small"?
BONNIE FORNEY:
Punk Globe will be about the first one.
Punk Globe:
Would you like to see "walking small" made into a movie?
BONNIE FORNEY:
I never thought of it until now. Maybe. Valerie Bertinelli could play me.
Punk Globe:
Tell us how all is going with you now in 2013?
BONNIE FORNEY:
Better. I don't feel as much like I am going insane anymore. I am trying to start over with Gary, the kids, Punk'N. I am just trying to put my life back together. I get disability now, which helps. I can never work again. It's also hard to trust people. I would say better, and leave it there.
Punk Globe:
You perform in the band Punk N' with your husband Gary tell us about the band?
BONNIE FORNEY:
I think Punk'N is the greatest band ever, and the best thing to ever happen to me. Gary wants me there even after all that has happened. I feel a part of something.
Punk Globe:
Do you have any Internet addresses you would like to share with the readers?
BONNIE FORNEY:
Look for Punk'N on Youtube. also www.PunkN.Webs.Com
Punk Globe:
Thanks so much for the interview Bonnie... Do you have any last words for Punk Globe readers?
BONNIE FORNEY:
Thank you for doing the interview! Come see Punk'N perform sometime. Gary and I are big fans of the Debutantes!
Punk Globe would like to thank Bonnie Forney for being so honest about her life. Helping others better understand D.I.D.
