When this was announced, I certainly wasn't going to miss one of
my all time fave bands playing so near my home town, so I put on
my leathers and prepared to pogo.
Yes, a drunken evening, and capacity crowd for Animal and the
boys, the support band were bloody awful, but as the League got
ready to take the stage, I positioned myself right at the front,
ready to sing along, and take some photo's (as seen here).
Opening with WE ARE THE LEAGUE, the boys followed classic with
classic, pausing only to play 2 songs from their latest CD, ROAD
TO RAMPTON. The set was basically a run through their classic
first album - all our faves present and correct....the reggae
tinged WRECK A NOWHERE, FOR YOU, WORLD WAR 3, an excellent
Punked up version of Max Romeo's WET DREAM was also a highlight.
THEN disaster struck!
During the first outing of SO WHAT!, a rather large heavy guy
decided to run from the back of the hall and bang straight into
me, crushing me against the steel barrier and putting me out
cold. I managed to regain my consciousness by someone throwing a
beer in my face, but strangely, I carried on singing along after
the event, (not knowing until the next day I had 3 severely
Broken Ribs!!!!)
Yet more Oldies but goodies came, I HATE PEOPLE, FUCK AROUND THE
CLOCK, then they were gone...........would they do an encore?
Dutifully they returned and encored with SO WHAT again, and a
Birmingham crowd once more went home Drunk, Sweatty and Happy.
LONG LIVE THE LEAGUE!!!!!!!!!!!
(Also, much respect to the guitarist Johnny SkullKnuckles for
giving me his t- Shirt)
