TWENTY EIGHT TO TWO HUNDRED

(28 to 200)

CD Review by Matthew M. Matheson

28 t0 200

A self titled 4-track EP from 2006 by a guitar-drums duo from the Netherlands.

Mister L and Aimée,  provide a straight forward, raw, simple, and self-described  “neo-garage rock” sound. Cool and hypnotic, it plays sure and steady,
with lo-fi grooves throughout.

Track 1, “Heavy Like Stalin” is a groovy little lick that introduces us to Aimée’s sexy and ambiguous voice.

Track 2, “Thief”, starts off with a few seconds of a dreamy organ riff, then quickly flips around onto  chunky guitar that wraps around like warm skin over Aimée’s soft chants. As a photo of her after a live show in the sleeve suggests, she no doubt just charged up a few boys and girls with her thick black mascara running down her face and puppy dog eyes. There is a tone in this song that makes me think of all the great girl-fronted Pacific Northwest bands of the early nineties. Anyone remember Hammerbox?

Track 3, “My Room,” was my personal favourite. The track starts off invoking the faith era of the cure, then, as is now predictable, quickly flips perfectly into a hopeful and upbeat groove that seems to tell us that it’s not over yet. It then slows the tempo again back to sedated and ethereal. The track starts to wind down beautifully with the line “when the rain comes down the track, pack my bags, and I’m never, never, coming back." Great, great tune!!

Track 4, “Devil’s Mix,” starts off with some cool and haunting guitar and vocals, even if you have no fucking clue what she’s singing about. I really like the guitar on this track. Just a real nice little bit of psycadelia provided by Mister L.

The EP sleeve has some really good original artwork by Mister L,
as does their website:
